HOUSTON – The unpredictable weather in southeast Texas can present challenges, especially during cold snaps. The rush to stay warm can lead residents to overlook potential dangers if they aren’t careful. Space heaters, while ideal for warming individual rooms, pose a significant fire risk if used improperly. Over the years, Houston has experienced numerous fires caused by unattended space heaters, some with tragic consequences.
According to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, approximately 1,700 residential fires are started by portable electric space heaters annually, resulting in nearly 80 deaths.
