## Sundance Film Festival 2025 Crowns its Winners
The 2025 Sundance Film Festival, a week-long celebration of independent cinema in Park City, Utah, concluded with the announcement of its highly anticipated award winners. This year’s festival showcased 94 feature-length and episodic works, along with 57 short films, representing a diverse range of storytelling styles and perspectives. The “best in indie storytelling,” as the festival is known for, was celebrated through both jury selections and audience acclaim.
The coveted Grand Jury Prize in the U.S. Dramatic Competition went to “Atropia,” a war satire directed and written by Hailey Gates. The film’s premiere saw stars Alia Shawkat and Callum Turner share their experiences. Shawkat, who also worked with Gates on the 2019 short film “Shako Mako,” described the genesis of “Atropia” as a collaborative effort born from a shared feeling of creative stagnation, ultimately leading them to expand their short into a feature-length film produced by Luca Guadagnino. Turner recounted receiving a message from Shawkat, which led to his involvement in the project.
Further Grand Jury Prizes were awarded to “Seeds” (U.S. Documentary Competition), “Sabar Bonda (Cactus Pears)” (World Cinema Dramatic Competition), and “Cutting Through Rocks” (World Cinema Documentary Competition). The NEXT Innovator Award, presented by Adobe, was bestowed upon “Zodiac Killer Project.”
Audience awards, reflecting the enthusiastic response of festival-goers, painted a different picture of the winning films. In the U.S. Dramatic Competition, “Twinless,” directed, written, and starring James Sweeney (with Dylan O’Brien co-starring and serving as an executive producer), secured the top prize. Sweeney expressed his overwhelming gratitude for the recognition, highlighting the significance of premiering at Sundance. O’Brien, also recognized with a U.S. Dramatic Special Jury Award for Acting, echoed Sweeney’s sentiments, acknowledging the unexpected nature of the film’s success. Other Audience Awards went to “André is an Idiot” (U.S. Documentary Competition), “DJ Ahmet” (World Cinema Dramatic Competition), “Prime Minister” (World Cinema Documentary Competition), and “East of Wall” (NEXT, presented by Adobe).
The Special Jury Award for U.S. Dramatic Ensemble Cast was presented to “Plainclothes,” a 1990s-set film directed and written by Carmen Emmi. The film, focusing on an undercover police officer who falls for someone he’s meant to arrest, explores universal themes of love, desire, and passion through the lens of a queer narrative. Cast members Russell Tovey and Maria Dizzia spoke of the film’s emotional resonance and the honor of being recognized at Sundance.
This year’s esteemed jury panels included prominent figures from the film industry, such as Reinaldo Marcus Green, Arian Moayed, and Celine Song for the U.S. Dramatic Competition, and other notable filmmakers and actors across various categories. The 2025 Sundance International Film Festival concluded on February 2nd, leaving a lasting impression with its diverse slate of films and the recognition of exceptional cinematic achievements.
