Treasure hunters are on the edge of their seats after being given the green light to dig up a buried canister that “could contain 10 tons of missing Nazi gold”.

Millions of pounds of cash, jewelry and other valuables may be hidden within the grounds of an 18th-century palace in Poland.

According to legend, wealthy Germans were asked to hand over their valuables to the SS to prevent Russia’s advancing Red Army from capturing them at the end of World War II.

But the loot disappeared, with speculation this was due to SS chief Heinrich Himmler ordering officials to use them to help build a Fourth Reich.

The canister is believed to contain the so-called “Gold of Wroclaw” which “disappeared from the police headquarters in what is now the Polish city of Wroclaw”.

It is claimed that a diary written by a senior SS officer and a map given to descendants may now have revealed its location.

A group investigating German-Polish relations claims the stash could be under an orangery in the palace, located in the village of Minkowskie.

Everything could become clear on September 1st, when the Silesian Bridge Foundation will start its excavations.

Treasure hunters digging for Nazi gold say they have found a metal canister that may contain four tons of looted treasure. The canister lies about 10 feet below the surface and is believed to be 4 to 5 feet long and 50 cm in diameter. The discovery was made using a georadar search of an abandoned conservatory in an 18th-century palace in the village of Minkowskie in southern Poland. Roman Furmaniak from the Silesian Bridge Foundation, who is leading the search, said:

A high-ranking SS officer named von Stein is said to have written in a diary entry: “A trough has been dug in the orangery, which is a safe “home” for the boxes and containers that have been delivered”.

He entrusted his mistress, who worked in the palace, to watch over the treasure.

In a letter from him it says: “My dear Inge, I will fulfill my assignment, with God’s will. Some transports were successful.

“I hereby entrust you with the remaining 48 heavy Reichsbank crates and all family crates.

“Only you know where they are. May God help you and help me to fulfill my mission.’

There is a possibility that the same diary could lead treasure hunters to another palace in the area, said to have buried another 28 tons of Nazi gold.

The Schlesische Brücke Foundation has a long-term lease on the castle, which has been controlled by many different groups over the years.

These include the Red Army, Polish Army and Municipal Council before it was later converted into a kindergarten and cinema.

Group President Roman Furmaniak said: “We are pleased to announce that we have received our latest permit required for the final excavation of the deposits.

“Save the date – September 1st! Big date for a big day! Things are moving, we’d love to sprint as best we can but we understand your impatience and we’re doing our best with what we have!’
