The State Department said the camera, weighing 53 pounds, was last found on Little York Road near the Eastex Freeway.

Houston — Texas Department of Health issued a notice Saturday night that an X-ray camera containing radioactive material was missing in the Houston area.

DSHS said a company with a license for the SPEC-150 radiology camera was using it in construction work. On Thursday, a camera was stolen from the back of a covered truck while employees were eating outside.

“They came in, ate, left, went back to the scene, and the cameras weren’t there,” DSHS’s Lara Anton said.

The radioactive material is sealed within multiple protective layers.

“The radiation source is in a capsule inside the camera,” said Anton. As such, the risk of radiation exposure was very low as long as one remained within the shielded compartment.”

According to Anton, the SPEC-150 radiological camera is used to check the welded metal to make sure there are no cracks or leaks.

According to DSHS, the 53-pound camera was last found on Little York Road near the Eastex Freeway.

If anyone finds the camera, DSHS warns them not to touch it if they try to open it, as the consequences of radiation exposure could be severe.

“The longer you are exposed to radiation, the more serious the consequences can be,” said Anton.

You can report the location by calling 911 or DSHS’s 24-hour phone number 512-458-7460. A reward is offered for its return.
