Text to XLS Converter Online

This Text to XLS Converter turns pasted text or a .txt file into a legacy Excel .xls file. That is the old Excel format, made for old Excel versions and old software that cannot open modern .xlsx files. Each line becomes one row. Each tab-separated value becomes one cell. The Text to XLS Converter runs in your browser, with no sign-up.

How to use the Text to XLS Converter Online

  1. Paste your text into the box marked “Paste your text here…”, or choose a .txt file with the file picker under it. If you do both, the file is used and the pasted text is ignored.
  2. Check your layout before you convert. One line becomes one row, and a tab becomes a new cell.
  3. Type a name in the box marked “Enter XLS file name (default: converted.xls)”, or leave it empty to use converted.xls.
  4. Click “Convert and Download XLS”.
  5. Save the .xls file when your browser offers it. The download starts at once, with no second step.

Your data sits on one sheet named Sheet1, in the same order as your text. Open it in an old or new Excel, in LibreOffice, or in the old program that asked you for an .xls file.

Worked example

Paste these four lines into the text box. In the real text, the values on each line are separated by a tab, not by spaces. The table below shows the exact cell values on each line.

NameScoreCity
Ana92Lahore
Ben88Leeds
Cleo95Lima

The tool splits your text at each line break to make rows. It then splits each line at every tab to make cells. So the .xls file holds one sheet, Sheet1, with 4 rows and 3 columns. Row 1 holds Name, Score and City. Row 2 holds Ana, 92 and Lahore. Leave the file name box empty, and the download is named converted.xls.

Example results

InputResult
Ana [tab] 92 [tab] LahoreOne row with three cells: Ana, 92, Lahore
Ana,92,Lahore (commas, no tabs)One row with one cell holding the full text Ana,92,Lahore
Text pasted and a .txt file also chosenThe file is converted. The pasted text is ignored
File name box left emptyThe download is named converted.xls
File name typed as sales.xlsThe download is named sales.xls, with Sheet1 inside

Limits and good to know

  • The output is the legacy .xls format, written with bookType xls. Pick this tool only when you need that old format.
  • Columns come from tabs only. Commas, semicolons and spaces do not split a line into cells.
  • You get one sheet, always named Sheet1. There is no formatting, no formulas and no styling.
  • The file name is used exactly as you type it. Type the .xls ending yourself, or the saved file has no ending.
  • If a file is chosen, it always wins over pasted text. There is no way to clear the file except to reload the page.
  • Cells hold the exact text you gave. A value typed as 092 stays as 092.

Why is my result empty or wrong?

You see the alert “Please provide text or upload a file.” Both inputs were empty. Paste some text or choose a .txt file, then click the button again.

Everything lands in column A. Your text does not use tabs between values. Add real tabs between the values, or export your data again as a tab-separated file, then convert once more.

Your pasted text was ignored. A file was also chosen, and the tool always uses the file first. Reload the page so no file is chosen, then paste your text and convert.

Your saved file has no .xls ending. The name box was used word for word. Convert again and type the full name with .xls at the end, such as sales.xls.

Why use this Text to XLS Converter Online?

Its job is maximum compatibility with old Excel versions and old software. Many older programs, import screens and office setups still accept .xls but fail on modern .xlsx files, and this tool writes that legacy format on purpose. It also accepts pasted text, so you can convert a quick table without saving a file first, and you can name the download yourself.

No. Your text and files are read and converted inside your browser. Nothing is sent to a server, and no account is needed.
