Thames, Beth: Christmas Cards Offer Insights
What happened to Christmas cards? I remember a time when they were ubiquitous, transforming mailboxes from simple metal boxes into festive, overflowing receptacles. Cards would arrive in a flurry, a veritable blizzard of holiday greetings, beginning in mid-December and often continuing well into January. The sheer volume was remarkable; they’d spill from the mailbox, sometimes even accumulating on the porch floor, a colorful testament to the season’s spirit of connection. It felt like flocks of migrating birds, each carrying a personal message, arriving at our doorstep. The timing varied, of course, depending on the sender’s own schedule – when they found the time to write, sign, stamp, and finally mail their cards.
