The bald eagle, a symbol of American power and strength for over 240 years, finally received official recognition on Tuesday. President Joe Biden signed legislation amending the United States Code to formally designate the bald eagle as the nation’s national bird. This corrects a long-overlooked omission, solidifying the bird’s status as a national icon.
The bald eagle, easily recognizable by its white head, yellow beak, and brown body, has been featured prominently in American symbolism for decades. Since 1782, it has graced the Great Seal of the United States, appearing on official documents alongside an olive branch, arrows, a shield, the motto “E Pluribus Unum,” and a constellation of stars. That same year, Congress designated the bald eagle as the national emblem, and its image continues to appear on everything from official documents and the presidential flag to military insignia and U.S. currency.
Despite its widespread use and assumed status, the bald eagle had never been officially declared the national bird until President Biden’s signing of this legislation. This act formally recognizes the bald eagle’s significance as a native North American species and a powerful symbol of the United States.
