Briefly: The software bug prompted Tesla to issue another safety recall in November, this time for the Model 3 and Model Y vehicle lines. According to the recall, the vehicles may experience intermittent taillights due to a firmware anomaly. The announcement follows two previous recalls in the same month that affected the electric vehicle maker’s Model S and X models.

A recall report has been issued by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) for certain 2023 Model 3 and 2020-2023 Model Y electric vehicles. The report states that the affected vehicles may experience random illumination of the tail lights on one or both sides of the vehicle, which may lead to a potentially increased risk of collision.

The random flashing is the result of a firmware anomaly that causes false error detections during the vehicle boot sequence. Based on the error description in the report, these false detections appear to be isolated from the vehicle’s taillights and do not affect the brake lights, reverse lights or turn signals.

The recall affects 321,628 units, all of which have been identified using specific manufacturing, configuration and firmware records. Tesla firmware versions 2022.28 to 2022.40.4 have been identified as the cause of the anomaly. The latest version, 2022.40.4.1, appears to be unaffected and exempt from the recall.

While recalls are not uncommon, this latest news marks another high point in an already busy month of recalls for Tesla. Earlier this month, NHTSA released recall information for the 2017-2021 Tesla Model S and X vehicles. to address power steering failures that occurred after driving on rough roads or hitting potholes.

The second recall of the month, announced shortly before the aforementioned firmware issue, identified problems with the calibration and deployment of the passenger airbag that affected nearly 30,000 units. According to the report description, seat belt control module calibration on certain 2021-2023 Model X vehicles. may cause the airbag to deploy in a low speed crash in an unintended and non-compliant configuration.

The airbag-related safety recall coincided with a 3% drop in Tesla’s stock price, sending the electric vehicle maker’s share price to its lowest level in two years.

Tesla is addressing issues related to all three recalls through over-the-air software updates. The “hands-off” approach allows recall issues to be resolved much more quickly than the usual physical vehicle recalls, which require an appointment and a hands-on remedy.
