Tide Defender Jumps Ship Before Deadline

Alabama linebacker Justin Okoronkwo has entered the transfer portal, according to a report by 247Sports. The 6-foot-3, 228-pound freshman, originally from Munich, Germany, recorded 14 tackles in his debut season in 2024. His playing time, as tracked by Pro Football Focus, totaled 39 defensive snaps, with his most extensive action coming in the shutout victory against Missouri, where he played 14 snaps.

A former three-star recruit ranked as the No. 506 overall prospect and No. 47 linebacker in the 2024 class, Okoronkwo was notably the top-ranked player from Germany. His departure leaves Alabama with several vacancies at inside linebacker, joining Jeremiah Alexander (transfer portal) and Jihaad Campbell (NFL Draft) among those not returning for the 2025 season.

However, the Crimson Tide will retain key players at the position. Justin Jefferson and Deontae Lawson have both announced their intention to return for the 2025 season. Furthermore, Alabama has bolstered its linebacker corps with the addition of Nikhai Hill-Green from Colorado via the transfer portal. Okoronkwo’s entry into the portal comes after a five-day window opened following Alabama’s ReliaQuest Bowl appearance. While the official deadline was Sunday, it’s possible for names to appear in the portal for up to two days afterward.
