Former Butte County Legal Luminary, Tom McCampbell, Passes Away at 92
Chico, CA – July 3, 2024 – It is with great sadness that the family of Tom McCampbell announces his passing on July 3, 2024. Tom, a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away peacefully at his home in Chico, surrounded by his loving family.
A Life of Service to the Community
Tom McCampbell was born in Chico on January 22, 1932, and was a third-generation Californian. He dedicated his life to serving his community through both his legal profession and numerous civic organizations.
Tom graduated from Notre Dame School, Chico High School, Chico State College, and Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California, Berkeley. He practiced law in Chico for an impressive 50 years, specializing in bankruptcy law.
Throughout his career, Tom held various positions of prominence, including Deputy District Attorney of Butte County and Chairman of the Butte County Bar Association Legal Aid Committee. He was a member of the California State Bar and was admitted to practice before the U.S. Supreme Court, all Federal Courts, and the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals.
Beyond his legal work, Tom was actively involved in civic organizations such as the Chico Host Lions Club, Chico Chamber of Commerce, Salvation Army, and Boy Scouts of America. He was a proud Eagle Scout and served as Chairman of the Notre Dame School Board.
A Legacy of Family and Faith
In 1957, Tom married Leola Jeffries, and together they raised eight children in Chico. They enjoyed many happy years together, spending time at their cabin in Lake Almanor with their family.
Tom was a devout Catholic and was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico. He was a past Grand Knight of Chico Council 1137, Knights of Columbus, and a member of the Fourth Degree General Assembly.
Community Mourns a Loss
Former Butte County District Attorney Mike Ramsey paid tribute to Tom McCampbell, saying, “Tom was a pillar of the legal community in Butte County for decades. His dedication to justice and his service to others will be greatly missed.”
Chico State University President Gayle Hutchinson also expressed condolences, saying, “Tom was a valued member of the Chico State community for many years. His contributions to the university and to the city of Chico will be remembered and cherished.”
Memorial Service
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on August 7, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Chico. The interment will be private.
In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a Mass be said for Tom at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church.
Tom McCampbell’s legacy will live on through his family, friends, and the many people whose lives he touched. He will be deeply missed but forever remembered as a kind, compassionate, and dedicated servant of the Butte County community.
