The TXT to XLSX (Excel) Converter turns a plain text file into a modern Excel .xlsx spreadsheet. Each line of your .txt file becomes one row. Each tab-separated value on that line becomes one cell. Upload the file, click Convert, and download the result as converted.xlsx. Your TXT to XLSX (Excel) Converter runs fully in your browser. No sign-up is needed.
How to use the TXT to XLSX (Excel) Converter
- Prepare your text file first. Put one row on each line. Separate the values on a line with the Tab key, not with commas or spaces.
- Under the heading “Upload your .txt file”, choose your .txt file.
- Click “Convert”.
- Wait for the words “Conversion Complete!” to appear under the button.
- Click “Download XLSX” to save the spreadsheet. The file is always named converted.xlsx.
Open the file in Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice. Your data sits on one sheet named Sheet1, in the same order as in your text file, ready to sort, filter and share.
Worked example
Save these four lines as a text file. In the real file, the values on each line are separated by a tab, not by spaces. The table below shows the exact cell values on each line.
| Name | Score | City |
|---|---|---|
| Ana | 92 | Lahore |
| Ben | 88 | Leeds |
| Cleo | 95 | Lima |
The converter splits the file at each line break to make rows. It then splits each line at every tab to make cells. So converted.xlsx holds one sheet, Sheet1, with 4 rows and 3 columns. Row 1 holds Name, Score and City. Row 2 holds Ana, 92 and Lahore. The other lines follow in the same way, in the same order.
Example results
| Input in the .txt file | Result in the sheet |
|---|---|
| Ana [tab] 92 [tab] Lahore | One row with three cells: Ana, 92, Lahore |
| Ana,92,Lahore (commas, no tabs) | One row with one cell holding the full text Ana,92,Lahore |
| Weekly report (one line, no tab) | One row with one cell: Weekly report |
| Two lines: Mon [tab] 5 and Tue [tab] 7 | Two rows, each with two cells |
| A blank line between two text lines | An empty row in the sheet at that spot |
| A file that ends with a final press of Enter | One extra empty row at the bottom of the sheet |
Limits and good to know
- The file picker accepts .txt files only, and you convert one file at a time.
- Columns come from tabs only. Commas, semicolons and spaces do not split a line into cells.
- You get one sheet, always named Sheet1. There is no formatting, no formulas and no styling.
- Cells hold the exact text from your file. A value typed as 092 stays as 092.
- The download is always named converted.xlsx. Rename it after saving if you need another name.
- No file size limit is set in the tool, but very large files can be slow because all the work happens in your browser.
Why is my result empty or wrong?
Nothing happens when you click Convert. This happens when no file was chosen. The tool shows the alert “Please upload a .txt file.” Choose the file first, then click Convert again.
Everything lands in column A. Your file does not use tabs between values. Open the file, or export it again from your app as a tab-separated or TSV file, then convert it once more.
There is a blank row at the end. Your file ends with an empty line, often from a final press of Enter. Delete that last empty line in your text editor and convert again.
The Download XLSX link never appears. The link only shows after the file has been read and converted. Make sure the file is a plain .txt file and that JavaScript is on in your browser.
Why use this TXT to XLSX (Excel) Converter?
It gives you the modern .xlsx format that current Excel, Google Sheets and LibreOffice all open without warnings. It is handy when a report, log or export arrives as tab-separated text and you need real rows and columns you can sort and filter. You do not install anything, you do not create an account, and your file stays on your device from start to finish. The row order and the exact values from your text file carry across unchanged, so what you check in the sheet is what you wrote.
