Annecy 2024 Unveils Official Short Film Selections
Annecy, France- The Annecy International Animation Film Festival and Market has unveiled the official selection of short films for its upcoming 48th edition, scheduled to take place from June 9-15, 2024.
After reviewing 1,505 submissions hailing from 108 countries, the festival jury has curated a diverse and compelling lineup featuring 67 films from 33 countries, showcasing the latest trends and innovations in short-form animation. These films will compete across four categories: Official, Off-Limits, Perspectives, and Young Audience. Additionally, 40 graduation films will be vying for recognition.
Official Competition
The Official Competition showcases 31 films that encompass a wide range of styles, techniques, and narratives. Notable selections include “[S]” by Mario Radev (United Kingdom), a poignant exploration of memory and loss; “Aquatic” by Shiva Sadegh Asadi (Iran), an immersive journey into the depths of human emotion; and “Circles” by Yumi Joung (South Korea), a visually stunning meditation on life’s interconnectedness.
Off-Limits Competition
The Off-Limits Competition is dedicated to experimental and avant-garde short films that push the boundaries of animation. Among the 12 selected films is “Families’ Albumx” by Moïa Jobin-Paré (Canada), a thought-provoking examination of family dynamics; “Corpus and the Wandering” by Jo Roy (Canada), an ethereal exploration of the human body; and “Acoustic Shadows” by Patrick Bergeron (Canada), a mesmerizing sonic and visual experience.
Perspectives Competition
The Perspectives Competition highlights emerging talents and innovative approaches in animation. This year’s selection features 16 films, including “The Girl and the Pot” by Valentina Homem (Brazil), a whimsical tale about the power of storytelling; “Hey Dad” by Wei Fan Wang (Taiwan), a heartfelt exploration of the complexities of fatherhood; and “Silent Panorama” by Nicolas Piret (Belgium), a visually captivating meditation on urban landscapes.
Young Audience Competition
The Young Audience Competition celebrates animation that captivates and inspires younger viewers. The eight selected films cater to a wide age range, from preschoolers to teenagers. Highlights include “Shelter Abri” by Julie Daravan Chea (France), a charming tale about finding comfort in unexpected places; “Hello Summer” by Martin Smatana and Veronika Zacharová (Slovakia, Czech Republic, France), a vibrant celebration of the joys of summer; and “Tuu-Tuu-Til” by Veronica Solomon (Germany), a playful and imaginative adventure for young minds.
Graduation Films Competition
The Graduation Films Competition provides a platform for showcasing exceptional student work from around the world. This year, 40 films will compete for recognition, representing a diverse range of academic institutions. Notable selections include “7 Missing” by Yuval Katz (Israel), a haunting exploration of loss and remembrance; “Carrotica” by Daniel Sterlin-Altman (Germany), a humorous and heartfelt story about a carrot; and “Humantis” by Paris Baillie (U.S.), a thought-provoking examination of human nature.
