BANGOR — After donating more than $742,000 in wireless hotspots and connectivity to nonprofits in Maine since 2021, UScellular is expanding its pledge to help connect youth in 2023. Nationally, the company is committing up to $13 million in additional funding to solving “homework”. gap” among youth who do not have access to reliable Internet outside the classroom in the United States. This includes a two-year Internet service renewal for the Boys & Girls Club of Bangor, valued at $36,960. The club initially received 35 hotspots and services in 2021.
“Free hotspots and Internet access over the past two years have helped us address ongoing equity issues around how to keep students connected outside of the classroom,” says Catherine Myatt, executive director of the Boys & Girls Club of Bangor. “The hotspots, shared with Boys & Girls Clubs and Bangor Housing families, have provided them with a reliable way to access the distance learning opportunities that are increasingly becoming the norm.”
Hotspots provided to the Boys & Girls Club of Bangor connect to UScellular’s network to provide high-speed connectivity for Club members throughout the Bangor area, and each hotspot has the potential to support multiple Club members on any given day.
UScellular’s After School Access Project provides mobile hotspots and two years of service to nonprofit organizations that support youth after the school day ends and offer secure Internet access for homework and education. To date, the company has donated more than $12 million, supporting over 100 organizations with access points and services across the country.
“We are thrilled to continue our commitment to connecting youth here in Maine to what matters most,” said Tabatha McKay, vice president/general manager of UScellular in New England. “Our after school project is just one way we help students have the confidence they need to grow and achieve their dreams.
