The death of Jimmy Carter has reduced the number of living former U.S. presidents. The late president, a renowned humanitarian, lived to the age of 100. Following his passing, the living former presidents are Bill Clinton, George W. Bush, Barack Obama, Donald Trump, and current President Joe Biden.

President Biden issued an official statement paying tribute to Carter, praising his “great character and courage, hope and optimism.” Former President Obama and Michelle Obama also honored Carter on social media, stating, “President Carter taught all of us what it means to live a life of grace, dignity, justice, and service.” Donald Trump, in a statement on Truth Social, acknowledged his philosophical and political disagreements with Carter, but also recognized Carter’s love for the country and his lasting contributions. Trump stated, “He worked hard to make America a better place, and for that, I give him my highest respect. He was a truly good man and, of course, will be greatly missed. He was also very consequential, far more than most presidents, after he left the Oval Office.”

With Carter’s passing, President Biden is now the oldest living former president at 81 years old. Donald Trump is 78. Jimmy Carter was 100 years old at the time of his death on December 29, 2024. He was elected president at the age of 52 and served from 1977 to 1981. President Biden’s term ends in January 2025, following the anticipated second inauguration of Donald Trump.
