HOUSTON — More than 20 years after the murder of Christopher Courtmansch, his mother never gave up hope. She is fighting to find out who took the life of her 17-year-old son.
“Everyone loved him. He just had that laugh. He was the star of the party.
She says Courtmanche attended clear lake high school and worked at Barnes & Noble. One night, a friend of his asked him to ride with him at a street racing event. he never came home.
“We were so distraught, it wasn’t real,” Arnett said.
Courtemanche was shot dead on Rankin Road on I-45 on October 28, 2001.
“He was hit twice. There were four bullets, two in the head. The other one hit the vehicle,” the sergeant said. Richard Rodriguez leads the Houston Police Department Cold Case Unit.
What stood out from the shooter’s published sketches were his gold-rimmed glasses. Police said he was driving a white SUV.
“I hope someone remembers something, especially the crowd of street racers,” Sergeant Rodriguez said.
Sam Hansen, one of Courtmanche’s friends who attended a street racing event with him that night, said there were at least 100 people there.
He said Rankin Road and a side road called Goodnight Trail are famous for racing.
“We get to the place and we do one or two races. There was,” said Hansen.
He said that after a few races Courtmanche and another friend left to put air in the tires. Then 15 minutes later he remembers a phone call saying Colemanche was shot.
“Somebody shot him. I’m taking him to the hospital now,” Hansen remembers another friend saying.
He doesn’t know why everyone wants Courtmanche dead.
“You see, he had no enemies. He was well-liked,” said Hansen.
“There was no exchange of words. There was no confrontation at the gas station they stopped at. There was no confrontation at the street racing event where everyone gathered to watch the cars race,” said Sgt. Was… Rodriguez.
Many questions remain unanswered for this mother who is left with nothing but memories.
“Help us win justice for Christopher. We’ve waited a long time, and the time has come,” said Arnett.
