For Trello users, the web interface is a viable solution for interacting with the service. Considering that the web interface is designed very well, it makes sense that many choose to go this route.

But what if I told you that you can get more than just a desktop app? That it could help you work more efficiently? Are you interested in this? I thought it might.

Some of the benefits are obvious, while others are more esoteric. Additionally, not all features work on every operating system. Let’s take a look at what might motivate you to switch from Trello for web to desktop. Hold on tight because it’s going to be a subtle ride.

Advantages of the Trello desktop app

It’s about perception

What’s new at TechRepublic

Let’s start with the esoteric reasons for introducing a desktop client. I get it, almost everyone works mostly in a browser these days. However, if you’re like me, I often feel like I’m not as productive as I could be on a particular app. Maybe it’s just my age, but given the choice of a desktop app or a web-based app, I choose the desktop app any day.

One of the reasons for this is my tendency to work with many tabs open in the browser. Yes, I use a good card management solution, but it’s not always enough. Even with my tabs divided into workspaces, my browser sometimes gets crowded. In this case it may take a little longer to find the card I need to work on. With the desktop app, I can either quickly glance at my desktop dock and bring the app back into focus, or use a keyboard shortcut to quickly scroll through my open apps.

I’m all for efficiency, so I’ll do anything to encourage it. And if I can get a little more efficient with the desktop app, that’s a win.

More notifications

This is one aspect that only applies to certain operating systems. When the Trello desktop app is running on macOS, you’ll take advantage of app icon notifications that let you get notified when a new Trello notification pops up without having to look at the app first. This is a feature you won’t find in the browser version of Trello.

More keyboard shortcuts

If you’re using macOS, you’ll find that there are other keyboard shortcuts available besides the ability to create custom keyboard shortcuts.

If you use the macOS desktop app and press CTRL+OPTION+SPACEBAR, you can also set a name and description for your tab, and you can even define a panel and list to hold it. Other keyboard shortcuts specific to the desktop application are:

  • CTRL+ALT+T:Start Trello.
  • CTRL+SHIFT+B: Open the panel page.
  • CTRL+SHIFT+D: Set current board as default.
  • CTRL+D: Go to default board.
  • CTRL+1-9: Jump onto one of your nine panels marked with a star.
  • CTRL+ALT+C: Copy the URL of the selected map.
  • CTRL+ALT+V: Open the URL of the selected map.

For example, if you’re using a MacBook with Touch Bar, you can use touch to go to starred panels, create new tabs, and open panels in new windows.

How to install the Trello desktop app

If you’re using an Apple or Windows device, you can find the official Trello app in their respective app stores. However, on Linux you need to install the application using a snap package. All you have to do is open a terminal window and enter the command:

sudo snap install trello desktop

That’s it. Open the app, sign in to your Trello account, and start managing those projects.

I’d recommend trying the Trello desktop app and see if it makes interacting with your boards a little more efficient. If not, you can always uninstall and go back to your web browser.
