Women tormented and threatened by men on houseboat on Murray River near Echuca Moama (2023-03-13 21:09:25)

Pregnant women have been caught up in a terrifying houseboat ordeal, with a group of men repeatedly tormenting them on a Victorian river.

The nine women were relaxing on the houseboat over the long weekend on the Murray River near Echuca when they were approached by a boatload of “drunk” men on Saturday evening.

“They started urinating on our stuff. There were death threats … they were saying like: ‘I hope you die’… calling us really scary names,” one of the victims, who chose to remain anonymous, told 3AW.

There were 12 men on the other boat, most with Irish accents, and they eventually left the women and headed up the river.

But hours later, they returned.

Parts of the terrifying incident were caught on camera, including the other boat sidling up right next to the women’s vessel and one of the men jumping on board before falling in the water.

“They ended up throwing glass bottles, which smashed all over the boat as well,” the victim told 3AW.

“It was absolutely terrifying, we were really scared for our safety.

“But then also, some of them were so intoxicated they were jumping between the boats, falling near the propellers”.

There were multiple pregnant women on board the boat, and the victim believed they may have been targeted because they were “women by themselves”.

The women praised the operator of the houseboat as he rushed to help when they raised the alarm.

“I felt threatened to the point where I recruited two friends to be there with me in my interaction with them,” Moama on Murray Houseboats operator Damien Nunan told Ilmhunt.

“(It was) the most disrespectful display by a group I have ever come across by a long margin.

“My concern is that if this group is allowed to behave like this without ramifications, it will continue to occur and escalate even further.”

Nunan said he will report the incident to NSW Police and the maritime authority.

The group of men are believed to be tourists staying in Echuca Moama.
