Enter your word count, pick your font, size and line spacing, and this calculator tells you how many pages it makes — the answer you need when an assignment says “five pages” but your word counter says 1,240 words. How to use the Words to Pages Calculator
- Enter your word count — or the word count you are aiming for.
- Choose the font and font size. For school and university work that is usually 12pt Times New Roman or Arial.
- Set the line spacing: single, 1.5 or double.
- Click Calculate Pages. Change any setting and calculate again to compare formats.
The worked example: how many pages is…?
Everything depends on words per page. In 12pt Times New Roman with standard one-inch margins, a single-spaced page holds about 500 words and a double-spaced page about 250 words. That gives:
| Word count | Single-spaced | Double-spaced |
|---|---|---|
| 500 words | 1 page | 2 pages |
| 1,000 words | 2 pages | 4 pages |
| 2,500 words | 5 pages | 10 pages |
| 5,000 words | 10 pages | 20 pages |
So a “1,000-word essay” is two pages single-spaced but a full four pages double-spaced — the single most common reason students misjudge how long an assignment really is.
Who uses a words to pages calculator?
- Students turning a page requirement into a word target. APA and MLA formats both default to double-spaced 12pt text, so roughly 250 words per page is the number to write towards.
- Authors estimating manuscript length: an 80,000-word novel draft in standard double-spaced manuscript format runs to about 320 pages.
- Speakers and presenters converting a script into minutes: a double-spaced page takes roughly two minutes to read aloud, so a five-page script is about a ten-minute talk.
How accurate is the estimate?
- Settings swing the result by about ±20%. At the same 12pt size, a wide font like Verdana fills more pages than a compact one like Garamond, and narrow margins fit more words than one-inch margins.
- Dialogue-heavy text runs longer. Every line break starts a new line, so a conversation-heavy chapter takes more pages than dense prose with the same word count.
- Extras are not modelled. Headings, block quotes, tables, images and a title page all add length the word count alone cannot see — treat the result as a close estimate, not an exact page proof.
Working to a page limit: practical tips
Convert the requirement before you write: pages × 250 (double-spaced) or × 500 (single-spaced) gives you a word target, and every word processor shows a live word count while almost none shows a live page-format preview. Write to the word number, then set the font, size and spacing at the end and check the page count once. If you land short, add substance — an example, a counterpoint, a clearer explanation — rather than inflating the font or margins, which markers spot instantly. If you land long, cut whole sentences instead of tightening tracking; the estimate above tells you roughly how many words each page you need to lose contains.
Words to Pages Calculator – frequently asked questions
How many pages is 1,000 words double-spaced?
Four pages, in 12pt Times New Roman with standard margins (about 250 words per double-spaced page). Single-spaced, the same 1,000 words fill about two pages.
How many words is a 10-page essay?
About 2,500 words double-spaced, or about 5,000 words single-spaced, at 12pt with standard margins. If a teacher set the assignment in pages with no word count, 2,500 words is the safe target for a double-spaced essay.
Does changing the font change the page count?
Yes. Fonts differ in width and height, so at the same nominal size one font can fill noticeably more pages than another. That is why “12pt” on its own does not define a page — font, size, spacing and margins together decide how many words fit.
Can I convert pages back to words?
Yes — multiply your page count by the words-per-page for your settings: about 250 for double-spaced 12pt, about 500 for single-spaced. The table above works in both directions.
