Senegal coach Aliou Cisse says he may have to change tactics in their final Group A game against Ecuador in order to reach the knockout rounds of the World Cup.

The Teranga Lions bounced back from their opening defeat against the Netherlands to beat hosts Qatar 3-1 on Friday and revive their hopes of a place in the last 16.

But Senegal must beat Ecuador on Tuesday to progress safely after the Dutch were held 1-1.

“We have to think about the proper approach to the last game. We have to win to qualify for the round of 16,” said Cisse.

“Our concentration must be better because we could have avoided conceding a goal [against Qatar]but the game in Ecuador will be different.”

Cisse’s African champions, who were without talisman and record goalscorer in the finals Sadio Mane due to injury, disappointed in a 2-0 defeat by the Netherlands but produced a better attacking display at the Al Thumama Stadium against Qatar.

Cisse made two changes to the starting 11, with Famar Diedhiou and Ismail Jakobs replacing Pape Abdou for Cisse and the injured Cheikhou Kouyate. Boulaye Dia, Diedhiou and Bamba Dieng scored.

“We started the second half well, took a 2-0 lead, and then we struggled a bit because Qatar was more aggressive and closed the gap,” added Cisse, who has been in charge of Senegal since 2015.

“However, we were better again in the transitional game and scored the crucial third goal.

“The team did what I asked. The basis is teamwork. Yes, it’s difficult to replace Sadio Mane, but at the end of the day it’s a team sport.”

Senegal reached the quarter-finals of the World Cup on their debut in 2002, but were eliminated in the group stage at the 2018 edition in Russia.
