WORLD CUP fans were stunned by referee Janny Sikazwe after he rejected Canada’s two penalty appeals against Belgium.

The Zambian official awarded Canada a penalty in the ninth minute after Yannick handled Carrasco in the penalty area.

Bayern Munich star Alphonso Davies failed to convert from 12 yards when Thibaut Courtois got down low to save.

But Canada continued to press the Red Devils and thought they should have been awarded a second penalty when Jan Vertonghen brought down Tajon Buchanan.

There appeared to be clear contact, but Sikazwe didn’t even have to make a decision as the assistant referee called for offside – despite Eden Hazard’s pass.

Former Premier League referee Mark Clattenburg said of the penalty miss: “Human error by VAR and Canada should have awarded the second penalty.”

The glaring error angered fans, many of whom felt Canada should have been penalized after Belgium’s Axel Witsel collided with Richie Larye.

Witsel appeared to push his opponent, but neither the referee nor VAR felt there was enough contact to warrant a penalty.

One fan wrote on Twitter: “Sorry for punching the ref but missing three penalties in a game is not good enough at the World Cup.

“One was corrected by VAR, but Canada should have received three penalties that game, and they only received one. Unacceptable at this level.”

Another added: “There should have been a penalty because then Vertonghen fouls him.” Canada is being robbed here.”

Sikazwe made headlines during the Africa Cup of Nations earlier this year and is yet to live up to his reputation in Qatar.

In the match between Tunisia and Mali, Sikazwe blew the final whistle before the 90th minute.

Sikazwe says he could have died of heatstroke, so he decided to blow up 13 seconds out of 90.

Already in the 85th minute, he marked the end of the game – before starting again from the beginning.

This led to chaos on the pitch as Tunisian players and officials rushed onto the pitch to confront the official.

They were losing 1-0, but they played against ten players.

Sikazwe later explained why he did what he did, saying he “could have gone back in the coffin”.
