Yograj Singh's Hindi Slur Sparks Outrage
Former Indian cricketer Yograj Singh has ignited a firestorm of controversy with his recent comments disparaging Hindi speakers and women in power. In an interview with Samdish Bhatia on the “Unfiltered” show, Singh controversially claimed that Hindi sounds “unmanly” and “lacks energy,” adding that when men speak it, it raises questions about their masculinity. He further mocked Hindi speakers from Uttar Pradesh and Bihar, contrasting their speech with what he termed the “manly” sound of Punjabi.

Beyond his linguistic criticisms, Singh made equally inflammatory remarks about women’s roles in society. He asserted that empowering women leads to domestic discord, citing Indira Gandhi’s leadership as an example of a woman’s power leading to national destruction. He stated, “Wife will destroy your house if you give her power. Sorry to say, Indira Gandhi ran this country and destroyed it. Give them respect and love, but never give them power.” The statement is widely seen as misogynistic and dismissive of women’s contributions to society.

Adding to the outrage, Singh also confessed to harboring murderous intentions towards Kapil Dev after being dropped from the national team by the 1983 World Cup-winning captain. This admission has further fueled public condemnation.

These remarks have prompted a wave of criticism on social media, with users denouncing Singh’s statements as anti-Hindi, anti-Hindu, and deeply offensive. Many have highlighted the misogynistic nature of his comments and the insult to the millions who speak and cherish Hindi. One X user stated, “The way anti-Hindi, Hindu, Hindustan, Yograj Singh has made fun of Hindi,” while another described the comments as “misogynistic and an insult to the millions who speak and cherish the language.”

Yograj Singh’s international cricket career was brief, spanning less than three months. He made his debut for India against Australia in Brisbane on December 21, 1980, under Sunil Gavaskar’s captaincy. His career comprised one Test match and six ODIs. However, his recent outspoken statements have overshadowed any past sporting achievements, generating widespread debate and condemnation.
