2024 Election Certification: Congress's 2025 Deadline
Four years after the January 6th, 2021 Capitol riot, the 2025 election certification unfolded on Monday, January 6th, 2025. Vice President Kamala Harris presided over the congressional count, officially certifying Donald Trump’s victory in the 2024 presidential election.

The certification ceremony, which began in the afternoon, was broadcast live on major cable news networks such as CBS News, PBS, and CNN. A recording of the event was subsequently available on various streaming platforms, including YouTube.

At approximately 1:00 p.m. ET, Vice President Harris announced the official results. “The state of the vote for the president of the United States as delivered to the president of the Senate is as follows: the whole number of the electors appointed to vote for president of the United States is 538. Within that whole number, the majority is 270,” she declared. “The votes for president of the United States are as follows: Donald J. Trump of the state of Florida has received 312 votes.”

Following the announcement, Harris shook hands with Speaker of the House Mike Johnson. Republican lawmakers applauded the certification of Trump and Vice President-elect J.D. Vance. Democrats likewise offered enthusiastic applause for Harris upon the announcement of her total vote count from the 2024 election.

Donald Trump’s second inauguration, following his 2016 victory, is scheduled for Monday, January 20th, 2025. This date adheres to the traditional January 20th inauguration day, unless that date falls on a Sunday, in which case the inauguration would be held on the 21st. J.D. Vance will be sworn in as Vice President on the same day. President Biden and Vice President Harris are expected to attend the ceremony.
