HTML is the language of the web page, but it is a noisy way to keep text: every paragraph arrives wrapped in tags, attributes and markup that mean nothing once the content leaves the browser. This free HTML to Markdown converter strips that noise away. Paste HTML copied from a page, an email or a document export — or drop an .html file — and get clean, readable Markdown with ATX headings, bold and links intact, and code blocks kept in fenced blocks. Copy the result or download it as a .md file. Everything happens locally in your browser: no uploads, no sign-up, and the pages you convert never leave your machine.
How to convert HTML to Markdown
Paste your HTML into the top box, or drag an .html, .htm or .txt file onto the drop area and let the file fill the box for you. Press Convert to Markdown and read the result in the lower box: headings, paragraphs, lists, links and code are rewritten in Markdown syntax while the tags disappear. From there, Copy Markdown puts the text on your clipboard for pasting into a notes app, a README or a static-site project, and Download .md saves it as a file — keeping the base name of a file you dropped, so guide.html becomes guide.md. The counter under the output shows how many bytes went in and how many came out, which is usually a satisfying drop.
Your HTML never leaves your device
The pages people convert are often drafts, internal documents or exported content that was never meant to sit on a stranger’s server. This tool is built so it never has to: the Turndown library runs entirely in your browser, your HTML is read locally, converted locally and downloaded locally. Nothing is transmitted, stored or logged. That also makes the tool fast and keeps it working offline once the page has loaded — handy when you are cleaning up exports on a train or in a client’s office.
Why Markdown, and what the conversion keeps
Markdown is plain text with just enough notation to carry structure: a # for a heading, dashes for a list, brackets for a link. Because it is plain text, it survives everywhere — GitHub renders it, note apps import it, static site generators build pages from it, and AI tools read it far more reliably than tag soup. The converter is tuned for that world. Headings use the ATX style (#, ##, ###), so they stay readable in raw text. Bold and italic become asterisks, links keep both their text and their destination as [text](url), images keep their alt text and source, and lists come out as dash or numbered items with their nesting preserved. Code gets special care: inline code keeps its backticks, and preformatted blocks become fenced code blocks with triple backticks, so code you rescue from a web page pastes straight back into an editor or a chat without losing its indentation.
Limits worth knowing
Markdown is deliberately smaller than HTML, so some things cannot survive the trip. Layout tables, inline styles, classes, scripts and form controls have no Markdown equivalent and are dropped or reduced to their text. Deeply nested or badly broken HTML — unclosed tags, tables used for layout — converts to the closest readable text rather than a perfect mirror. Very large files up to 10 MB are accepted, but a whole saved web page includes navigation, footers and cookie banners that you probably want to delete first; converting just the article’s HTML gives a much cleaner result. If the output comes back empty, the input likely held only scripts or empty elements with no readable content.
HTML to Markdown Converter – frequently asked questions
Is this HTML to Markdown converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, needs no sign-up, and you can convert as many pages or snippets as you like.
Is my HTML uploaded to a server?
No. The conversion happens locally in your browser and nothing is uploaded, so the content you paste or drop stays on your device.
What happens to links, images and code blocks?
Links become [text](url) with their destination kept, images keep their source and alt text, and code blocks are written as fenced blocks with triple backticks so their formatting survives.
Can I convert a whole web page?
You can paste or drop a full page’s HTML, but the cleanest result comes from converting just the main content — menus, banners and footers convert too, and usually you do not want them in your Markdown.
