PDF to Text Converter – Extract Text from PDF Files Free

Need the words inside a PDF, not the PDF itself? This free PDF to text converter pulls the actual text out of your document, page by page, and hands it back as a plain .txt file you can open anywhere: search it, quote it, paste it into your notes or feed it to another tool. Drop your file in, check the preview of what was found, and download the text. No installation and no account — and one honest warning up front: the tool reads the PDF’s built-in text layer, so scanned pages that are really just pictures will need OCR software instead.

How to extract text from a PDF

Drag your PDF onto the drop zone, or click it to pick the file from your device. The converter opens the document, walks through it page by page and collects the text stored on each page, keeping the pages in their original order and marking where each one starts in the output. As soon as the extraction finishes you will see how many pages and characters were found, together with a preview showing roughly the first 3,000 characters, so you can check the text looks right before saving anything. Press Download .txt and the full text downloads as a single plain-text file named after your PDF. If a page holds nothing but an image, it simply contributes no text at all — and the converter tells you plainly when a document produces little or no text, instead of pretending otherwise.

Your file never leaves your device

This converter protects your privacy by design: the file is converted locally in the browser and never uploaded to any server. Your PDF is opened and read by a PDF engine running entirely on your own machine, so contracts, bank statements, application forms and personal letters never travel across the internet. Once the page has loaded you could even go offline and still extract text. Nothing is stored or kept afterwards, because nothing ever leaves your device in the first place — close the tab and the extracted text is gone unless you chose to download it.

The text layer, and why scanned PDFs come out empty

Every normal PDF carries a hidden text layer: the actual characters, stored alongside the instructions for drawing them on the page. That layer is what lets you select words with the mouse, search a document with Ctrl+F and copy a paragraph into an email. This tool simply reads that layer out in reading order, page after page, grouping the words into lines roughly the way they appear. A scanned PDF is a different thing entirely. A scanner saves photographs of pages, so the file can look exactly like a document while containing no characters at all — open it and try selecting a word; if nothing highlights, there is no text layer to extract. Turning those page images back into text requires OCR (optical character recognition), which guesses characters from pixels. This converter deliberately does not do OCR, so a scanned document will produce little or no text here, and the tool says so honestly rather than inventing words.

Limits, page counts and file requirements

The tool accepts PDFs up to 30 MB. Because the extraction runs on your device, very long documents are limited by your device’s memory rather than by a server, and a book-length PDF may take a few seconds while its pages are read one by one. Password-protected (encrypted) PDFs cannot be opened, and a corrupt file cannot be read either; the tool will tell you in both cases. The output is plain text, so fonts, colours, columns and images do not carry over: tightly packed multi-column layouts may read across the columns, and hyphenated line breaks from the original page stay as they are. Tables come out as lines of words, not as a spreadsheet.

PDF to Text Converter – frequently asked questions

Is this PDF to text converter free?

Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark and no limit on how many PDFs you can convert to text.

Is my PDF uploaded anywhere?

No. The file is read locally in your browser and never uploaded, so your documents stay on your own device from start to finish.

Why did my PDF produce no text?

It is almost certainly a scanned or image-only PDF with no text layer. This tool does not do OCR, so run the file through OCR software first, then extract the text from the OCR copy.

How are the pages separated in the .txt file?

Each page is extracted in order, and from the second page onwards a separator line — —– Page N —– — is inserted before that page’s text, so you can always tell where one page ends and the next begins.
