Finding the right university website sounds trivial until you meet the third fake portal, the outdated copy and the search ad dressed up as an official page. This free University Finder cuts through that: it searches the open Hipo university-domains-list — the same database behind universities.hipolabs.com, with more than 10,000 institutions — by country or by name, and links you straight to each university’s own website. No rankings, no sponsored placements, just the institution and its real address on the web.
How the University Finder works
On your first visit the page loads the complete Hipo dataset — one open file of over 10,000 university records, each with a name, country, two-letter country code, region where known, email domains and official web pages. The country menu is built from the data itself, sorted A to Z, so it always matches what is actually in the list. Searching then happens entirely in your browser: the tool filters the records you already hold by the country you picked and by the name fragment you typed, which is why results appear instantly and why you can refine a search as many times as you like.
How to use it
Wait a moment for the “Database ready” message — the full list is a couple of hundred kilobytes compressed, loaded once. Then combine the two filters however suits you: country only, to browse everything in Spain or Canada; name only, to find every “Polytechnic” or “Oxford” on Earth; or both, to pin down one institution fast. Results show as cards with the university name, its country and region, and clickable official website links. Because a broad search can match thousands, the page shows the first 60 matches and tells you the true total — narrow the name fragment to see the rest.
Why an official-website finder matters
Admissions deadlines, tuition figures and visa letters all live on the official site, and all three are targets for imitation. Agents and unofficial portals copy university branding, rank above the real site in ads, and sometimes charge for information the university gives away. Starting from a curated domains list flips the process: instead of trusting whatever a search engine surfaces, you begin from the institution’s recorded web address and domain. The same domains in each record are the ones universities use for staff and student email, so an offer letter from a different domain deserves a second look.
Exploring study destinations by country
The country filter doubles as a first map of a study destination. Pick a country and scroll: you will see how concentrated its universities are — some countries list hundreds across every region, others a handful in the capital — and the region field on each card shows whether an institution sits where you imagined living. That breadth is a starting point, not a shortlist: the list records that a university exists and where its website is, not whether it is accredited for your purpose, teaches in your language or admits international students. Those checks belong on the official site this tool takes you to.
About the data — and its limits
The Hipo university-domains-list is a community-maintained open project, contributed to by hundreds of volunteers and used by developers worldwide; this page credits it in the tool footer and loads the identical dataset that powers the Hipolabs service. Community data has honest limits: a brand-new institution may not be listed yet, a merged university can linger under its old name, and a website link occasionally moves before the list catches up. If a card link fails, searching the exact university name together with its domain from the record will almost always land you on the current site.
University Finder – frequently asked questions
Is the University Finder free?
Yes. Searching the full list and following the official website links are completely free, with no account and no sign-up.
Where does the university data come from?
From the Hipo university-domains-list, the open community database behind universities.hipolabs.com. This page loads that dataset directly, so you search the same records the service itself uses.
Why are only 60 results shown?
A broad search — one country, or a common word like “National” — can match hundreds or thousands of institutions. The page shows the true count and the first 60 cards; adding more of the name will narrow the list to exactly what you need.
What if my university is missing or its link is broken?
The list is community-maintained, so very new, merged or renamed institutions can lag behind reality. Try a shorter fragment of the name, and if the website link fails, search the name together with the country — the record still tells you the country and region to expect.
