Free eBook Finder — Search & Download Free Project Gutenberg Books

Some book finders only tell you a book exists. This free eBook Finder goes further: it searches Project Gutenberg through the Gutendex catalogue and gives you the actual files — read the book online in your browser, or download a proper EPUB for most e-readers, a Kindle edition, or a plain-text file. Every book here is free and legal to download, because its copyright has expired or its rights holder released it. The page opens with the most-downloaded Gutenberg books right now.

How the Free eBook Finder works

The tool queries Gutendex, the structured catalogue of Project Gutenberg, live in your browser. Gutenberg volunteers have digitised tens of thousands of public-domain books over five decades, and Gutendex turns that library into clean data: title, authors with their birth and death years, subjects, a download count and — most importantly — the list of file formats available for each book. When you search, this page reads that format list and builds only the links that really exist for that title, so you never tap an EPUB button that leads nowhere.

How to use it

Type a title, an author surname or a keyword and press Search free eBooks. Add the topic filter when a search is too broad: “Frankenstein” needs no help, but “history” as a keyword returns far better results narrowed to the History topic. Each card shows the cover when Gutenberg has one, the authors and their years, how many times the book has been downloaded, and up to three subject chips. Use Load more to keep walking through a long result set — Gutenberg search results are paged, and popular queries run to hundreds of books.

Which format should you download?

Read online opens the HTML edition instantly — best for a quick look or for reading on a computer. EPUB is the right choice for most e-readers, tablets and reading apps, because the text reflows to your screen and font size. Kindle is the Mobipocket edition prepared for Amazon devices and apps. TXT is the raw plain-text file: tiny, universal, and the safest option for older devices, text editors or feeding a book into your own tools. If a book lacks a cover image, the card shows a plain placeholder — the text itself is still complete.

What you will — and will not — find here

Project Gutenberg is a library of classics, not of last year’s bestsellers. Its strength is the canon: Austen, Dickens, Twain, Conan Doyle, Jules Verne, plus history, philosophy, science writing, poetry, drama and children’s books whose copyright has expired, mostly in the United States. That is also its limit — a living author’s recent novel will not be here, and should not be. Think of this finder as the download door into that specific library: if the book is in Gutenberg, this page gets you the file in two clicks; if it is not, no filter will conjure it.

Reading tips for Gutenberg editions

Older books often exist in several editions, and the download count is a useful tiebreaker — the most-downloaded edition is usually the cleanest scan with the best formatting. Illustrated editions are worth preferring for children’s books and adventure stories. Finally, remember these texts were set for print: a chapter that looks long on a phone is normal, and most reading apps let you bookmark, search within the text and adjust spacing until a century-old book feels made for your screen.

Free eBook Finder – frequently asked questions

Are these eBooks really free and legal?

Yes. Project Gutenberg distributes books whose copyright has expired or that were released for free distribution. Downloading and reading them is legal, with no account and no payment.

What is the difference between this and a general book search?

A general book search finds bibliographic records anywhere. This finder searches only Project Gutenberg and links directly to downloadable files — online reading, EPUB, Kindle and plain text where available.

Why does a book have no EPUB or Kindle link?

Not every Gutenberg book was converted into every format. The card only shows links for formats that exist for that title; the online and plain-text editions are almost always available.

Why did my search find nothing?

Try the author’s surname alone, a shorter title, or clearing the topic filter. Books still in copyright are not in Project Gutenberg, so recent titles will honestly return no results.
