A Life Well Lived

It is with profound sorrow that we announce the passing of Stephen P. Gagliardi, a beloved husband, father, brother, and grandfather. Steve passed away peacefully on May 22, 2024, at the age of 75, surrounded by his loving family at the VA’s Togus Springs hospice.

Steve was born on April 28, 1949, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island, to Domenick and Frances Gagliardi. He grew up with a deep love for the outdoors, spending summers in Brooklin, Maine, and developing a lifelong passion for sailing.

After graduating from East Greenwich High School, Steve attended Yale University, where he excelled both academically and athletically. He played football and rowed crew, demonstrating his determination and commitment to teamwork.

A Dedicated Veteran

In 1969, driven by a sense of duty, Steve left Yale and joined the United States Navy. He served as an electronics technician, attaining the rank of ET First Class in 1973. During his time in the Navy, Steve participated in the 5th Naval District sailing championship, leading his team to victory in 1971, a testament to his exceptional sailing skills.

A Skilled IT Professional and Handyman

Upon his honorable discharge from the Navy, Steve embarked on a successful career in the IT industry. He began as a field service technician for the Burroughs Corporation and later relocated to Peacham, Vermont, where he raised his family. Steve became a highly skilled and respected IT professional, working for over 30 years at Maine General Medical Center. He dedicated his time to maintaining the hospital’s IT systems, ensuring the smooth functioning of critical medical equipment.

After retiring from Maine General in 2015, Steve found a new calling as a handyman for the Sisters of St. Joseph in Winslow. He approached this role with the same diligence and passion he had shown throughout his life. Steve’s ability to fix virtually anything and his willingness to lend a helping hand made him an invaluable asset to the community.

A Devoted Family Man

Steve’s greatest joy in life was his family. He married Martha Shaughnessey on May 2, 1970, and together they raised three sons: Joshua, James, and Richard. Steve was a loving and supportive father, always encouraging his children to pursue their passions and dreams.

As a grandfather, Steve cherished his three grandchildren: Anna, Emily, and Ryan. He delighted in spending time with them, sharing his love for the outdoors and teaching them valuable life lessons.

Legacy of Service and Community Involvement

Steve’s commitment to serving others extended beyond his family and work. He was an active member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville, where he volunteered his time and supported various outreach programs.

Steve also had a deep affinity for the Penobscot Marine Museum and the Northeast Kingdom Santa Fund. He made regular donations to both organizations, recognizing the importance of preserving maritime history and bringing joy to children in need.

A Life of Adventure and Accomplishment

Steve lived a full and adventurous life. He was an avid sailor, spending many happy hours on Eggemoggin Reach. He was also a skilled woodworker, creating beautiful pieces of furniture that his family will cherish for generations to come.

Steve will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless lives he touched. His legacy of service, kindness, and unwavering love will continue to inspire those who knew him.

Funeral Arrangements

Calling hours will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, 60 Eustis Parkway, Waterville, on Tuesday, May 28 from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. A funeral will be held at St. Mark’s Episcopal Church in Waterville on Wednesday, May 29 at 11 a.m. A burial in Brooklin will take place at a future date.
