Cary Knight Bradford, a man whose life was marked by love, service, and a deep appreciation for the beauty of the natural world, passed away peacefully on June 3, 2024, surrounded by his family. He was 89 years old.
Born in 1935 to Julia Holt Bradford and George Knight Bradford, Cary’s early years were spent in a loving and supportive family environment. His formative years were shaped by his education at Governor Dummer Academy and Harvard University, where he developed a lifelong passion for learning and intellectual pursuits.
A Devoted Husband and Father
In 1959, Cary married Harriet “Happy” Ware Langmaid, his beloved wife and lifelong partner. Together, they raised three daughters, Ann Bradford de Cifuentes, Julie Wheeler, and Betsy Bradford, in the town of Waterville, Maine. Their home was filled with laughter, music, and a deep sense of family connection.
A Career Dedicated to Innovation and Excellence
Cary spent his professional life at Keyes Fibre Company, where he worked for 35 years. Known for his dedication to excellence and his innovative spirit, he made significant contributions to the company’s success. Upon his retirement, he and Happy moved to Belfast, Maine, where they embraced the close-knit community and became actively involved in local affairs.
A Pillar of His Community
Cary’s commitment to service extended beyond his family and professional life. He served on the Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast’s Council and dedicated his time to the committee overseeing Belfast’s Summer Nights’ music festivities, bringing joy and entertainment to the community.
A Passion for Adventure and the Outdoors
Throughout his life, Cary maintained an unwavering passion for adventure and the outdoors. From a young age, he was an avid sailor, navigating the waters of Maine and beyond with skill and enthusiasm. He also shared his love of skiing with his family, spending countless days on the slopes of Saddleback Mountain.
In his later years, Cary enjoyed golfing with his grandson, creating lasting memories on the golf course. His love of the natural world extended to his daily walks, where he could be found observing the beauty of his surroundings.
A Life Remembered with Love and Gratitude
Cary Knight Bradford’s life was a testament to the power of love, service, and a spirit of adventure. He is survived by his beloved wife, Happy; his daughters, Ann, Julie, and Betsy; his grandchildren, Madeleine and Benjamin; and a large extended family who will forever cherish his memory.
A celebration of Cary’s life will be held in July. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Unitarian Universalist Church of Belfast in his memory.
Cary Knight Bradford’s legacy will live on through the countless lives he touched and the memories he created. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the wider community that knew and loved him.
