Roots in Holly Pond, Alabama
Richard L. Shoemaker was born on September 28, 1931, in Holly Pond, Alabama, to Edgar and Hester (Wisener) Shoemaker. He spent his formative years in the small town, graduating from Holly Pond High School in 1950.
Excellence in Higher Education and Service to Country
After high school, Dr. Shoemaker embarked on a brilliant academic career, earning a Bachelor of Science and Master’s degree from Auburn University. His exceptional aptitude in science led him to join the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War, where he furthered his education by obtaining a Master’s Degree in Meteorology from Oklahoma State and later a Ph.D. from the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
A Distinguished Scientist and Educator
Following his honorable discharge from the Air Force, Dr. Shoemaker joined Eastern Air Lines as a meteorologist. He subsequently joined the faculty of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where he spent the next 42 years, rising to the rank of professor and chairman of the Department of Physiology and Biophysics. During his tenure at UAB, Dr. Shoemaker authored and co-authored numerous scientific journals and books, becoming a highly respected expert in his field. He regularly participated in medical seminars and meetings worldwide, sharing his knowledge and contributing to the advancement of science.
A Pillar of his Community
Beyond his academic pursuits, Dr. Shoemaker was an active and dedicated member of Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrior, where he generously supported missions and various church activities. He was a true servant leader, always willing to lend a helping hand to his neighbors, friends, and family members.
A Loving Husband, Father, and Grandfather
Dr. Shoemaker was a devoted and loving husband to his wife, Gladys. Together, they raised four sons – Steven, Ben, Bill, and Robert – and welcomed three stepsons – Bill Wilson, David Wilson, and Mark Wilson – into their family. Dr. Shoemaker cherished his grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren, who affectionately called him “D-Daddy.” His family was the source of his greatest joy and pride.
Recognizing a Life of Achievement
Dr. Shoemaker’s exceptional contributions to science and education were recognized with numerous honors and awards. He served as President of the Alabama Academy of Science, a testament to his leadership and dedication to the advancement of scientific knowledge.
Remembering and Honoring a Remarkable Man
A memorial service for Dr. Shoemaker will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 11 a.m. at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrior, Alabama. Friends and family are invited to pay their respects and celebrate Dr. Shoemaker’s extraordinary life.

Funeral Arrangements
Funeral services for Dr. Shoemaker will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at Mt. Zion Baptist Church in Warrior, Alabama, at 11 a.m. Friends are invited to visit with the family prior to services, from 10:30 a.m. until services begin. Burial will follow services in Holly Pond Cemetery, Holly Pond, Alabama.
