Add Watermark to Image – Text or Logo Watermark Online, Free

A watermark does not make a photo theft-proof, but it makes theft visible — and that stops most casual reuse. This free tool stamps either text (your name, your brand, your ©) or your own logo image onto a photo, at the opacity and position you choose. One discreet corner mark for portfolio work, or a tiled pattern across the whole frame for proofs you send to clients.

Everything is drawn at full resolution in your browser. The unwatermarked photo never leaves your device — only the stamped copy downloads.

How to watermark an image

  1. Click the file box and choose the photo.
  2. Stay on Text watermark and type your name or brand — or switch to Logo watermark and pick a logo file (a PNG with transparency looks best).
  3. Set opacity and position. For a corner mark, 40–60% opacity is visible without shouting. For client proofs, tick the tile option.
  4. Click Download watermarked PNG.

A worked example, with the numbers

A 3000 × 2000 portfolio photo with a 22%-width logo: the logo is drawn 660 px wide, keeping its own aspect ratio, tucked into the corner with a margin of 3.5% of the photo width (105 px). At 55% opacity it reads clearly over both sky and shadow. Tick Tile instead and the same logo repeats on a diagonal-friendly grid — roughly 5 columns by 4 rows at that size — so no crop can remove it without destroying the picture.

Single mark or tiled?

  • Single corner mark: branding. It says “mine” politely and survives because most reusers will not bother cropping. Use it for social posts and portfolios.
  • Centre mark: stronger. It sits on the subject, so cropping cannot save a thief — but it also distracts your real audience.
  • Tiled pattern: protection. For paid proofs, stock previews and client galleries. Even a heavy crop keeps some of the pattern.

Honest limitations

A watermark deters; it does not encrypt. A determined editor can clone-stamp a corner mark away, which is why the tile mode exists. This tool draws one logo or one text string — no per-photo batch stamping; for a whole shoot, a desktop tool is faster. And save your clean original: the stamp is baked into the download permanently.

What a watermark can and cannot do legally

A visible watermark is evidence and deterrent, not a legal shield by itself. Your photos are protected by copyright from the moment you take them (in most countries, automatically), and a watermark simply makes ownership obvious and misuse provable — a cropped-out or painted-over mark is widely read as a sign the reuse was knowing. What a watermark cannot do: stop screenshots, prevent all copying, or replace a licence agreement with a client. For work that matters commercially, pair the mark with written terms, keep your RAW originals and metadata, and register the work where your country offers registration. The practical stack most working photographers use is exactly that: clean originals archived, stamped copies shared, terms in writing.

One more practical note: put the mark on the exported copy only. Platforms compress uploads aggressively, and a too-subtle 20% mark can wash out entirely after recompression — which is why the guidance above starts at 40% for corner marks. Test by downloading your own post once and looking at what survives.

Frequently asked questions

What opacity should I use?

For branding, 40–60%: clearly yours, not distracting. For proofs people should not reuse, 25–35% tiled — light enough to judge the photo, present everywhere they look.

Text or logo watermark?

A logo looks more professional and is harder to imitate quickly. Text wins when you have no logo file, or when the mark must include changing details like a date or a client’s name.

Does watermarking reduce quality?

No. The export is a PNG at the photo’s original dimensions, with the mark composited at that full resolution.
