Basketball Standings Calculator is a free online tool from Ilm Hunt. It runs in your browser, needs no sign-up, and gives you an answer in seconds. Coaches, players, fans, and league organisers use tools like this to keep track of results without a spreadsheet.
You can use it on a phone, a tablet, or a computer. There is nothing to download and nothing to install. Just open the page, enter your numbers, and read the result.
How to use it
Using the tool takes less than a minute. Follow these steps, and you will have your answer right away.
- Enter your teams, names, or scores in the boxes above.
- Check that every number is typed the right way round.
- Press the button under the form to work out the result.
- Read the table or total shown below the button.
- Change any number and press the button again to try a new case.
How the scoring works
Basketball standings are sorted by win percentage, not by total wins alone. Win percentage is wins divided by games played. That matters when teams have played a different number of games. Games behind shows how far a team sits from first place. It is half the difference in wins plus half the difference in losses, so one game behind means a team needs one more win, or the leader needs one more loss, to catch up.
The tool applies the same steps every time, so two people with the same numbers always get the same answer. That matters in a league, where a small mistake in the order can change who finishes first.
Worked example
Team A is 10-2, Team B is 8-4, and Team C is 6-6. Team A has a win percentage of .833, Team B .667, and Team C .500. Team B sits 2 games behind: it has 2 fewer wins and 2 more losses than Team A, and half of 2 plus half of 2 is 2. Team C sits 4 games behind. Win percentage keeps the order fair even if a team has played fewer games.
Try the same numbers in the tool above. You should get the same result, which is a good way to check that you typed everything in the right boxes.
Tips for better results
- Enter wins and losses only. The tool works out percentage and games behind.
- Leave a team name blank to leave that team out.
- Win percentage, not total wins, decides the order here.
- Games behind of 0 means the team leads the table.
Double-check the names and scores before you press the button. Most wrong answers come from a mistyped number, not from the tool itself.
Common questions
What is win percentage?
Wins divided by games played. A 10-2 team has .833.
What does games behind mean?
How many games a team must make up to catch the leader.
Can I use it mid-season?
Yes. Enter the wins and losses so far and the table updates.
That covers the main points. If you run a league or a group, this tool saves you the maths and keeps the table fair for everyone.
Keeping a written record of your results helps you spot patterns over time. Save the table after each round, and you can see which teams improve and which ones fade. A short note next to each result, like a key injury or a late goal, makes the record even more useful later.
Sharing the table with your group keeps everyone on the same page. Send a screenshot or a copy of the numbers after each round, so nobody has to guess the standings. Clear numbers also settle arguments fast, because the table shows the same facts to everyone.
