The instrument you feel more than you hear

Try it with the demo groove. Listen to the pattern, then copy it slowly: same string, same frets, same rhythm. Once it feels easy, change one note and hear how the groove changes. That single change is the beginning of writing your own bass lines.
Rhythm matters more than notes
Beginners worry about which notes to play. Experienced bassists worry about when to play them. A bass line with three notes played in perfect time sounds professional; a bass line with thirty notes played out of time sounds like noise. Practise with a steady pulse: tap your foot, count one-two-three-four, and place your notes exactly on those beats.
A useful exercise is to play just one note, the open E string, on every beat for a full minute. It sounds boring, and it is the best timing training there is. When your foot and your finger agree perfectly, add a second note. Your timing is now a skill you own, and it will follow you to every instrument you ever play.
