Early Life
Bernard Plants was born in Chicago, Illinois, on January 1, 1928, to Bernard F. Plants and Frona (Roberts) Plants.
Military Service
In 1946, during World War II, Bernard joined the United States Air Force and was stationed at Englin Field, Florida. He received an honorable discharge on January 14, 1948.
Family and Marriage
On January 31, 1949, Bernard married the love of his life, Doris June Schoonover, in Menden, Nevada. They made their home in Tuolumne County and had four children: Ron, Sandi, Larry, and Diane. Bernard was predeceased by his wife Doris in 2017.
Career and Retirement
In 1955, Bernard and Doris moved to Orland, California, where he worked for the City of Orland for 33 years. He initially oversaw the Parks and Recreation Department and later became the Streets Department Director. In 1988, he retired as the Public Works Director and moved to Chico, California.
Faith and Community Involvement
Bernard and Doris were devout Christians and attended the Orland Evangelical Free Church. They remained active in church throughout their lives, attending various churches in the Chico area. Bernard was known for his generosity and purchased over 100 full-sized Bibles to give to individuals he met.
Personal Attributes
Bernard was a hard-working and dedicated family man. He possessed strong values and was committed to his faith and family. He was loved and respected by all who knew him.
Legacy and Memorial Service
Bernard peacefully passed away on April 25, 2024, at the age of 96, surrounded by his family. A graveside service will be held in his honor at the Orland Cemetery (3900 County Road P, Orland) on Saturday, June 8, 2024, at 11:00 AM. Arrangements are being handled by Sweet-Olsen Family Mortuary.
