Birmingham's Ensley community: A man discovered dead in his home, victim of a stabbing.

A man was found dead from an apparent stabbing on New Year’s Eve in Birmingham’s Ensley neighborhood. Birmingham Police West Precinct officers responded to a residence in the 2500 block of 15th Street just after 7 p.m. Tuesday. Upon entering the home, officers discovered the victim unresponsive and immediately transported him to UAB Hospital via Birmingham Fire and Rescue Service. He succumbed to his injuries at the hospital.

Officer Truman Fitzgerald stated that the victim appeared to have been stabbed, though the official cause of death will be determined by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office’s autopsy. While investigators have interviewed several individuals at the scene, the circumstances leading to the fatal assault remain unclear. A friend of the victim discovered him injured and contacted emergency services. “However, our officers are trying to track down if anyone saw what took place,” Fitzgerald added.

Police have had previous contact with the residence, primarily responding to disputes. However, Officer Fitzgerald clarified that the victim was not the individual with whom officers were previously familiar. No arrests have been made in connection with the homicide.

The victim’s identity has not yet been publicly released. This marks Birmingham’s 151st homicide of the year. This total includes one officer-involved shooting, three cases where the victims died in 2024 but the incidents occurred in prior years, and 11 homicides ruled justifiable.

Anyone with information regarding this incident is urged to contact Birmingham homicide detectives at 205-254-1764 or Crime Stoppers at 205-254-7777.
