A chessboard you can print anywhere

Not every chess game needs a wooden board. Sometimes you need a board for a classroom, a club night, a lesson handout, or a game on the move, and a printed chessboard is the simplest answer. It costs nothing, it weighs nothing, and if it gets torn or rained on, you print another one. This generator makes a clean, correctly proportioned 8 by 8 board with alternating light and dark squares, ready to print on ordinary paper.

Printed boards are surprisingly practical. Teachers print a board per student so a whole class can follow a lesson position at the same time. Coaches hand out printed diagrams with a position already marked, or leave the board blank so students can set up a position themselves. Travellers print a board and carry flat magnetic pieces, or simply use coins as pieces on a train. And chess clubs use printed boards for simultaneous displays and puzzle sheets, where a real board for every position would be impossible.

How to use the generator

Choose how many boards per page. One board fills the page and is best for actual play with small pieces or counters. Two or four per page suit handouts and puzzle sheets, where each board shows a different position to solve. Then decide about coordinates: showing the a to h files and 1 to 8 ranks is essential for notation lessons, because students need to name squares. Turn them off for a cleaner board for casual play.

Set the number of pages and download the PDF. It prints at full size on A4, and the squares stay square as long as you print at 100 percent scale.

Learning chess notation on paper

Coordinates turn a printed board into a teaching tool. Ask a student to point to e4, then to find the knight on g8, then to name the square a queen lands on after a move. These tiny exercises build board vision faster than any app, because the student has to look, count, and answer without a hint button. A stack of coordinate boards plus a set of simple questions is a complete first lesson.

Games and puzzles on a printed board

Use counters, coins, or small stones as pieces and play a full game on a printed board. Or print four small boards and set up four mate-in-one puzzles, one per board, for a puzzle race. Puzzle sheets like this are a club-night staple: everyone gets the same sheet, everyone works at the same time, and the first to solve all four wins. You cannot do that easily with one wooden board, but you can do it with one sheet of paper.

Keep a board in your bag

A printed chessboard folds into a notebook and is ready whenever a game breaks out. Generate a few pages, print them, and you will never be without a board again.

Printed boards for analysis and study

Serious chess study happens away from the board as much as on it. When you read a chess book, the diagrams show positions you need to understand, and a printed board lets you set each one up with counters and work through the moves by hand. Print four small boards on one page and you can follow four variations of the same opening side by side, comparing where each one leads. Coaches use this constantly: one page, four positions, and a question under each one. Students who analyse on paper remember positions better than students who click through them on a screen, because setting up a position by hand forces you to notice every piece. Keep a folder of printed boards with your study notes, and your chess library becomes a workbook you can return to again and again.
