Concept Flashcard Generator Free & Online from Terms

Turn a glossary list into cards you can actually test yourself with.

What this tool does

This tool turns a list of terms and definitions into flashcards you can test yourself with. You paste one term per line in the format term, colon, definition, and the tool builds a card per line with the term visible and the definition hidden until you press reveal. Self-testing with hidden answers beats re-reading notes, because trying to recall an answer strengthens memory far more than seeing it again.

It works fully in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and you do not need an account. Paste your text, press the button, and read the result on the same page. That makes it useful for students, researchers, and anyone who has to get through a long paper quickly without losing the important parts.

How to use it

Write your terms and definitions as one line each, with a colon between term and definition, and paste them into the box. Press the make button, then work through the cards top to bottom: say or write the definition from memory before pressing reveal, and mark the ones you missed to repeat. Shuffle by re-pasting in a different order if the sequence itself starts giving answers away.

Worked example

Three lines, epistemology defined as the study of knowledge, ontology as the study of what exists, and heuristic as a practical rule of thumb, become three cards. The first card shows only epistemology, and pressing reveal shows the study of knowledge. A student can run the whole set in a minute, which is short enough to repeat daily before an exam.

How to read the results

The output is a stack of cards, each with a bold term, a hidden definition, and a reveal button, plus a count of cards made. Lines without a colon are skipped rather than turned into broken cards, so a miscount usually means a formatting slip in one line.

Do not treat the output as a final answer. It is a starting point for your own reading. Skim the highlighted parts first, then read the full passage around anything that matters for your work. A tool can point at the likely important sentences, but only you can judge whether they are actually important for your question.

Honest limits

Cards are only as good as the definitions you write: a vague definition makes a vague card, and a card that merely names a term without explaining it tests recognition, not understanding. The tool extracts patterns, it does not write definitions for you, and it cannot judge whether a definition is correct. For exam preparation, pair flashcards with practice questions that ask you to use the concept.

This tool does not use artificial intelligence, and it does not understand your paper the way a human reader does. It follows fixed rules that you can inspect in the results. That is a strength when you want transparent, repeatable results, and a weakness when a passage needs real understanding, context, or judgement.

Tips for best results

Paste clean text. Remove page headers, footers, and reference lists before you paste, because they add noise to word counts and sentence scores. Work on one section at a time for long papers, and keep your original file open beside the tool so you can check anything surprising against the source. If you use the result in your own writing, always cite the original paper, never the tool output.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Yes. The tool is free to use online, with no sign-up and no download.

Is my text stored anywhere? No. Everything runs in your browser tab. Closing the tab removes your pasted text.

Can I trust the output completely? No tool of this kind should be trusted blindly. Use it to speed up reading and checking, then verify the important claims yourself in the original text.
