What is the D&D 5e lookup?

Dungeons & Dragons 5th edition has hundreds of spells, monsters, classes and magic items, spread across the Player’s Handbook, the Monster Manual and several supplements. This lookup searches the official System Reference Document (SRD) — the free, openly licensed core of the game — so you can find any entry in seconds instead of flipping through books mid-session.

How to use it

  1. Pick a category: spells, monsters, classes, races or equipment.
  2. Type part of a name in the search box — the list filters instantly.
  3. Click an entry to see its full stats and description.

For spells you get level, school, casting time, range, duration, components and the full text, including what changes at higher levels. For monsters you get armor class, hit points, speed, all six ability scores with modifiers, challenge rating, traits and actions.

Worked example: Fireball

Choose “spells”, type “fire”, and click Fireball. You will see a 3rd-level evocation with a casting time of 1 action, a range of 150 feet and a duration of instantaneous. Each creature in a 20-foot-radius sphere must make a Dexterity saving throw, taking 8d6 fire damage on a failed save, or half as much on a success. At higher levels the damage increases by 1d6 for each slot level above 3rd — so a 5th-level Fireball deals 10d6. That is exactly the kind of mid-game question this tool answers in one search.

What the SRD covers — and what it does not

The SRD contains the core rules content Wizards of the Coast released for free reuse: one subclass per class, a solid spell list, and a representative monster roster. It does not include every subclass, spell or monster from paid books such as Xanathar’s Guide or Tasha’s Cauldron — if a name is missing here, it is probably outside the SRD, not a bug. The data comes live from the open D&D 5e API, so entries always match the published SRD text.

Who is it for?

Dungeon Masters checking a monster’s stats before combat, players verifying a spell’s range before casting, and new players learning what their class can actually do. Because everything runs in your browser, it works on phones at the table just as well as on a desktop.

Frequently asked questions

Is this the full D&D ruleset? No — it is the free SRD subset. It covers the core game but not paid-book content.

Do I need an account? No. The lookup is free and needs no sign-up.

Does it work offline? No — entries are fetched live from the D&D 5e API, so you need an internet connection.

Can I use it during a game? Yes. Search is instant and the pages are mobile-friendly, which is exactly what table play needs.

Building your first character with the lookup

If you are new to D&D, the lookup doubles as a learning tool. Start with races: compare a hill dwarf’s Constitution bonus and poison resistance against a high elf’s Intelligence bonus and extra cantrip, and you can feel how race shapes a character before you commit. Then open classes and read the hit die and saving throws — a wizard’s d6 hit die and Intelligence saves tell you immediately that the class is fragile but mentally strong, while a fighter’s d10 and Strength saves say the opposite. Finally, browse first-level spells to see what your character could actually cast at the table. Ten minutes with the lookup gives a new player more understanding than an hour of guessing from a blank character sheet.
