What is an Excel file viewer?

An .xlsx file is a spreadsheet — rows, columns, formulas and formatting packed into one file. Normally you need Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets or LibreOffice to read one. What it handles — and what it does not

The viewer reads cell values and shows up to 200 rows per view to keep large files fast. It does not run formulas (it shows the stored values Excel last calculated), and it does not reproduce Excel’s colours, fonts or charts — it is a reader, not a full spreadsheet editor. For quick checks, lookups and CSV export, that is exactly what most people need.

Privacy

Your file is parsed entirely in your browser using the open-source SheetJS library. It is never uploaded to any server, which makes this safe for work files you would rather not send anywhere.

Frequently asked questions

Does it work with .xls (old Excel) files? The viewer targets modern .xlsx files; very old .xls files may not parse — resave them as .xlsx first.

Is there a file size limit? No hard limit, but very large files (tens of thousands of rows) render the first 200 rows per view for speed.

Can I edit the spreadsheet? No — this is a viewer and exporter. Edits need a full spreadsheet app.

Is my data safe? Yes. Processing happens on your device; nothing leaves the page.

Formulas, filters and printing

One question comes up constantly: “Will I see my formulas?” The viewer shows the value Excel last calculated for each formula cell, not the formula text itself. For reading reports, budgets and exported data that is almost always what you want — the number, not the algebra behind it. If you truly need the formulas, open the file in a spreadsheet app instead. The search box works as a quick filter: type a product name, a date or a customer and the table narrows to matching rows while the header stays visible, which is usually faster than scrolling a thousand-row sheet. And because the CSV export contains exactly the current sheet’s data, you can move a table into another tool, an email or a database import without retyping anything.

A note on formatting

Excel files often carry colours, bold headers, merged cells and number formats. This viewer deliberately ignores styling and shows clean values: dates stay as dates, numbers stay as numbers, and merged header cells appear as their stored value. The trade-off is worth it — the page loads instantly even for big files, and the CSV export is tidy instead of a mess of formatting codes.
