Gad Explains New 'Star Wars' to Brooks for 'Spaceballs' Sequel

Actor Josh Gad recently recounted a hilarious anecdote about pitching a “Spaceballs” sequel to comedy legend Mel Brooks. During an appearance on Kelly Ripa’s “Let’s Talk Off Camera” podcast, Gad revealed the extent of Brooks’ involvement in the project and the unexpected challenge he faced.

To gain Brooks’ approval for their sequel concept, Gad found himself delivering a forty-minute, blow-by-blow recap of the recent “Star Wars” sequels. He described the experience as intensely nerve-wracking, comparing it to a combat veteran recounting a battle, sweating profusely as he meticulously detailed every plot point, comedic beat, and visual gag from the films.

Gad’s detailed explanation clearly impressed Brooks, who responded with the praise Gad called “the greatest compliment I’ve ever received”: “It really sounds like you’ve got your finger on the pulse!” This endorsement further solidifies Brooks’ involvement and enthusiasm for the “Spaceballs” sequel.

News of the sequel, with Gad serving as producer, writer, and star, broke earlier this year. In November, Gad confirmed the completion of the first draft of the script. The original “Spaceballs,” released in 1987, starred Bill Pullman, Daphne Zuniga, John Candy, Rick Moranis, and Mel Brooks himself, and famously parodied the “Star Wars” universe. With Brooks’ blessing and Gad’s impressive pitch, the new “Spaceballs” sequel promises to be a worthy successor.
