Free Games Like Wordle

Five letters, six guesses, one puzzle a day. If you finish your Wordle before your coffee cools and immediately want another, you are not alone — the game launched an entire genre of daily word puzzles. Here are the best free games like Wordle, from near-identical twins with the difficulty turned up to clever twists on the format.

Dordle, Quordle and Octordle — more grids, same rules

These variants give you several Wordles at once, and every guess applies to all of them. Dordle runs two boards at the same time. Quordle runs four, which forces you to spend early guesses gathering letters rather than solving any single board. Octordle runs eight, and for the truly stubborn there is Sedecordle with sixteen. The strategy shifts completely: information guesses come first, and you solve the easiest board to bank progress. Our Quordle Solver handles the four-board version when a grid refuses to crack.

Absurdle — the Wordle that fights back

Absurdle looks like Wordle but cheats fairly: it has not secretly chosen a word. Instead, after each guess it narrows its hidden list to whichever set of answers keeps the game going longest, effectively changing the word whenever it can. You always win eventually, but scores are measured in how few guesses you needed to corner it. It is a brilliant way to learn how much information each guess really gives you.

Waffle — Wordle meets a crossword grid

Waffle arranges letters in a waffle-shaped grid with the answers already scrambled in place. You swap letters — a limited number of swaps per puzzle — until every row and column forms a word, with green and yellow clues after each move. It rewards pattern recognition over guessing, and a perfect game (solving with swaps to spare) is deeply satisfying.

NYT Strands and Connections — word association puzzles

The New York Times built a family around Wordle’s daily habit. Connections gives you sixteen words to sort into four groups of four that share something — categories range from straightforward to devious. Strands hides themed words in a letter grid, where every letter is used exactly once and a “spangram” spans the whole board. Both are free in limited form and scratch the same daily itch with logic instead of spelling.

Spelling Bee — build words from seven letters

Also from the NYT stable, Spelling Bee gives you seven letters arranged around a centre letter. Make as many words of four or more letters as you can; every word must use the centre letter, and longer pangrams that use all seven earn bonus glory. It is the closest cousin here to classic word-finding, and a great companion to our Words With Letters finder when you are one word short of Genius rank.

Worldle and Globle — Wordle for geography lovers

Worldle shows you the silhouette of a country and gives you six guesses, with distance and direction hints after each one. Globle drops the guess limit and colours a world map by proximity — hot and cold, country by country. Neither involves spelling at all, yet both deliver the same daily deduction loop.

Semantle — guess the secret word by meaning

Semantle’s secret word is scored by semantic similarity: every guess gets a closeness rating based on how related its meaning is, not its letters. Your first fifty guesses may all be ice cold, and then a single near-synonym cracks it open. It is frustrating in a completely different way from Wordle, and wonderful for anyone who thinks in associations rather than spellings.

Squaredle — a daily word hunt in a grid

Squaredle gives you a small square of letters each day — 4×4 in the standard puzzle — and asks you to find every hidden word by sliding through adjacent letters, Boggle-style, with bonus words for using the trickier letters. There is no guessing against a hidden answer: the full word list exists, the game tells you how many words remain, and finishing the grid is a test of thoroughness rather than deduction. It suits players who found Wordle too short and want a puzzle that can fill a commute.

How to choose your next daily game

Want more of the same, only harder? Take Quordle or Octordle. Want the format twisted? Absurdle and Waffle. Prefer thinking over spelling? Connections and Semantle. And keep the original habit sharp with our Wordle Solver and Wordle Tips and Tricks — plus the full library in the Word Tools hub for every game above that uses letters.
