Geographical Research Map Tool Free & Online, OpenStreetMap

See where the research in your review actually took place.

What this tool does

This tool plots study locations on an interactive OpenStreetMap map. You enter one location per line as latitude, longitude, and a label, and the tool places a marker for each one, so you can see the geography of a body of research at a glance. A review that looks global in prose often turns out to cluster in a handful of cities, and a map makes that visible immediately.

It works fully in your browser. Nothing is uploaded to a server, and you do not need an account. Paste your text, press the button, and read the result on the same page. That makes it useful for students, researchers, and anyone who has to get through a long paper quickly without losing the important parts.

How to use it

Find the coordinates of each study site, for example from the paper’s methods section or a maps search, and type one per line in the format latitude, longitude, vertical bar, label. Press the plot button and click markers to read their labels. If a line is skipped, check that its latitude is between minus 90 and 90 and its longitude between minus 180 and 180.

Worked example

Two lines, one for London at 51.5074, minus 0.1278 labelled London study site, and one for New York at 40.7128, minus 74.0060 labelled New York study site, produce two markers across the Atlantic. Even with two points the pattern question appears: are these sites representative, or just convenient for the authors?

How to read the results

The output is a map with one marker per valid location, plus a count of valid points and of skipped lines. Clicking a marker shows its label. The map uses OpenStreetMap tiles through the Leaflet library, and if that library fails to load, the tool says so plainly instead of showing a blank box.

Do not treat the output as a final answer. It is a starting point for your own reading. Skim the highlighted parts first, then read the full passage around anything that matters for your work. A tool can point at the likely important sentences, but only you can judge whether they are actually important for your question.

Honest limits

The tool plots only what you enter, and it uses coordinates, not place names, so a mistyped number puts a marker in the wrong place. It cannot verify that a study really took place at a site, and it shows nothing about sample size or quality unless you put that in the label. Check coordinates against the original papers before using the map in assessed work.

This tool does not use artificial intelligence, and it does not understand your paper the way a human reader does. It follows fixed rules that you can inspect in the results. That is a strength when you want transparent, repeatable results, and a weakness when a passage needs real understanding, context, or judgement.

Tips for best results

Paste clean text. Remove page headers, footers, and reference lists before you paste, because they add noise to word counts and sentence scores. Work on one section at a time for long papers, and keep your original file open beside the tool so you can check anything surprising against the source. If you use the result in your own writing, always cite the original paper, never the tool output.

Frequently asked questions

Is it free? Yes. The tool is free to use online, with no sign-up and no download.

Is my text stored anywhere? No. Everything runs in your browser tab. Closing the tab removes your pasted text.

Can I trust the output completely? No tool of this kind should be trusted blindly. Use it to speed up reading and checking, then verify the important claims yourself in the original text.
