A GIF is a fine format for a looping animation and a poor one for almost everything else: editors, slides, documents and design tools all prefer PNG, and an animated GIF hides every frame but the first when you drop it into most programs. This free GIF to PNG converter opens the file properly. Drop in a GIF and it extracts every frame as its own full-size PNG image, correctly composited just as the animation plays, with a thumbnail and download button per frame — plus a ZIP of the whole set. A still GIF simply converts to a single PNG. No installation, no account and no frame left behind.
How to convert a GIF to PNG
Drag your GIF onto the drop zone, or click the zone to pick the file from your device. The tool reads the file and shows its name and size. Press Convert to PNG and the converter parses the GIF, decompresses every frame and rebuilds each one on a full-size canvas, honouring each frame’s position, transparency and disposal instructions, so the PNGs look exactly like the animation you know. Each finished frame appears as a thumbnail with its own download link, named yourfile-frame-1.png, yourfile-frame-2.png and so on, and a Download all frames (ZIP) button at the top bundles the complete set into one file.
Your file never leaves your device
This converter protects your privacy by design: your file is converted locally in your browser and never uploaded to any server. Your GIF is decoded frame by frame by code running on your own machine, so screen recordings, chat stickers and personal animations never travel across the internet and nothing is stored anywhere. Once the page has loaded you could even go offline and still convert. Nothing about the animation — its frames, its timing or where it came from — is seen by anyone but you.
Why extract frames as PNG at all?
PNG is lossless and supports full transparency, so an extracted frame is an exact still of the animation at that moment, ready to edit, print or reuse. Pull the one perfect frame out of a reaction GIF for a thumbnail. Break a product animation or a loading spinner into steps you can inspect, fix and re-export. Recover frames from an old animated banner whose source files are long gone. And because GIFs are limited to 256 colours per frame, converting does not add quality that was never there — but it does move the pixels into a format every modern tool can open, layer and save without flattening the animation away.
Limits, frame counts and file requirements
The tool accepts GIF files up to 20 MB. Because the conversion runs on your device, a GIF with hundreds of frames, or very large dimensions, is limited by your device’s memory: every extracted PNG is held in the page until you download it, so huge animations are best handled on a desktop. A corrupt file, or one that is not really a GIF, cannot be opened and the tool will tell you. Frame timing is not carried into the PNGs — PNG is a still format — but the frames arrive in play order, numbered, so the sequence is never lost.
GIF to PNG Converter – frequently asked questions
Is this GIF to PNG converter free?
Yes. It is completely free, with no sign-up, no watermark on the images and no limit on how many GIFs you can convert.
Does it convert every frame or just the first?
Every frame. The GIF is fully decoded and each composited frame becomes its own PNG, downloadable one by one or all together in a ZIP.
Is my GIF uploaded anywhere?
No. Your file is converted locally in your browser and never uploaded, so your animations stay on your own device from start to finish.
What if my GIF is not animated?
It converts to a single PNG, exactly as you would expect — a still GIF is simply a one-frame animation.
