Weather Alert: Houston Forecast – January 4, 2025
By Anthony Yanez, Chief Meteorologist
Enjoy pleasant weather today, Saturday, January 4th, ideal for tackling those holiday decorations. Temperatures will reach the low 70s with light easterly winds. Expect mostly cloudy skies with a possibility of light drizzle early in the day. [Link to radar tracking]
However, another severe weather system is approaching, though less intense than last week’s tornado outbreak. Damaging winds are the primary threat, with a chance of isolated tornadoes. While all areas are at risk, northeast Houston, including Huntsville, Conroe, Livingston, and Liberty, should be particularly vigilant and prepared.
Freezing Temperatures and Strong Winds Coming Monday
Houston’s first freeze of the season is expected Monday morning. While unlikely to cause pipe bursts, protect your tropical plants by bringing them indoors or covering them. Strong northwest winds (15-25 mph) will create wind chills in the teens and twenties. Bundle up; this frigid weather will persist through Monday and Tuesday.
Minimal Chance of Snow
While snow in Houston is rare, requiring a precise alignment of atmospheric conditions (near-freezing temperatures and perfectly positioned low pressure), the timing of freezing temperatures and precipitation doesn’t align this week. The highest chances of precipitation are during the afternoon and night when temperatures are above freezing. While snow isn’t entirely ruled out, the probability is extremely low, with perhaps the best chance Thursday morning.
Cold Mornings Ahead
Note the significantly cold mornings from Monday through Thursday, with temperatures at or below freezing. However, daytime highs will reach the 40s. This arctic air mass will depart by next weekend.
