How to Change the Font in Your Discord Username and Bio

Discord does not have a font picker. You cannot open settings and choose a new typeface for your messages. What you can do is paste styled Unicode characters, which look like different fonts, into the places Discord allows. The trick is knowing which field accepts what, because Discord treats your @username, your display name, and your server nicknames very differently.

The three names Discord gives you

Your @username is your unique handle. It only accepts lowercase letters, numbers, periods, and underscores, so no fancy font will ever work there. Your display name is the name most people see next to your messages, and it accepts styled Unicode up to 32 characters. Your server nickname can be different in every server, and it also accepts styled text. If a guide tells you to paste a fancy font into your username, it is really talking about your display name, and mixing the two up is the most common source of confusion.

Steps to change your display name font

First, write your name in plain text and keep it short, because styled letters still count toward the 32-character limit, and decorated styles with extra marks count even more. Second, convert the name and pick a readable style. Bold, italic, and small caps have the widest support; heavy glitch styles can be clipped by Discord’s line height or flagged by moderation bots. Third, copy the styled name. Fourth, open User Settings, go to Profiles, paste into Display Name, and save. Fifth, check the result in a server member list and in chat, on mobile as well as desktop.

Steps for your bio and status

Your About Me bio accepts styled text up to 190 characters, and your custom status up to 128 characters. Bios also support Discord markdown, so you can mix a bold markdown heading with a styled name for a clean look. Keep the bio readable: a styled name plus plain description works better than a fully styled bio. Avoid putting critical information, such as a contact detail or a link description, only in a fancy style, because screen readers may read styled letters one by one.

Fonts in messages and channel names

In messages, you do not need a generator for basic bold and italic: two asterisks around a word make it bold, and one asterisk makes it italic. Use a generator for styles markdown cannot make, such as cursive or small caps, or for names and bios where markdown does not apply. Channel names accept styled text but are forced to lowercase, so small caps and bold sans look the most consistent there. Remember that a name starting with a symbol may sort to the top of the member list, which some servers ban, so check the server’s rules before you decorate a nickname.

Quick checklist

Use styled text in your display name, nickname, bio, or status, never in your @username. Prefer bold, italic, or small caps for reliability. Keep decorated names short so they fit the limits. Test on mobile and desktop, and keep a plain version of your name ready in case a server asks you to change it.

Styling role names, channel topics, and events

Display names and bios are the main places for Discord fonts, but they are not the only ones. Role names set by server admins can carry styled text, which helps important roles stand out in the member list, though readability should come first for roles people need to find quickly. Channel topics, the short descriptions under channel names, also accept styled text, and a styled keyword at the start of a topic can draw the eye to a rule or an announcement. Event titles in a server can use the same trick sparingly. In all of these places, the same limits apply: keep styled words short, prefer bold or small caps for reliability, and remember that server moderators can change nicknames and roles that break server rules. A style that works in your own server may be removed in someone else’s, so treat fancy fonts as decoration that can be taken away, not as part of your identity.
