Every website layout looks different once real words fill it. Headings wrap, cards stretch, and buttons move. Lorem Ipsum exists to let you test the layout before the real copy is ready, so you can judge spacing, typography, and hierarchy without being distracted by wording that will change. Used well, it saves a redesign; used badly, it hides real problems until launch.
Why Lorem Ipsum, and not real words
Lorem Ipsum is scrambled Latin derived from a text by Cicero. It looks like language, with realistic word lengths and sentence rhythms, but it means nothing, so reviewers comment on the design instead of the wording. That is its whole point. When you put real draft copy into an unfinished design, reviewers read the copy and argue about phrasing, while the layout problems you wanted feedback on go unnoticed. Filler keeps the review focused on the visual system: type sizes, line lengths, spacing, and balance.
Steps to generate the right amount
First, list the sections of your page: hero, feature cards, about block, article body, footer. Second, estimate the real word count for each section. A product card teaser needs about 20 words, a blog excerpt about 50, a feature block about 120, and a standard article body about 500. Third, generate exactly that amount per section rather than dumping the same five paragraphs everywhere. Fourth, paste the filler into your design tool or template, keeping headings and buttons in real words, because those are the elements users actually read first. Fifth, view the page at phone width, tablet width, and desktop width, because filler that looks fine on desktop often overflows on a phone.
Paragraphs, sentences, or words
Most generators offer three modes, and each fits a different job. Paragraphs suit body sections and article templates. Sentences suit headlines, captions, and short descriptions where you need a realistic sentence shape. Words suit tight spaces such as buttons, labels, and card titles, where you need to test how a fixed number of words fits. Some generators also wrap output in HTML paragraph tags, which saves time when pasting into a web template. Choose the mode that matches the space you are testing, not the mode that is easiest to click.
When to stop using filler
Filler has a limit that many designers learn too late: real content has awkward properties that Latin lacks. Real headings vary wildly in length, real product names are long and unbreakable, and real prices, dates, and names break layouts in ways filler never will. Use Latin filler for early layout exploration, then switch to representative real copy before you sign anything off. A good rule is to replace filler section by section as real copy arrives, and to re-check the layout after each replacement, especially on small screens.
Mistakes to avoid
The classic mistake is shipping a page with Lorem Ipsum still in it; search your site for lorem before launch, every time. Another is generating the same block for every section, which makes every card look identical and hides the fact that real sections differ in length. A third is testing only at desktop width, which misses the mobile overflow that filler would have revealed if you had looked. Treat filler as a measuring instrument: it is only useful if you read what it tells you.
