Skowhegan Resident, 64, Passed Away July 23

Joanne G. Hewett, 64, of Skowhegan, Maine, passed away on July 23, 2023, at her home. Joanne was born in Skowhegan on January 1, 1959, to John and Mary (Smith) Hewett. She graduated from Skowhegan High School in 1977 and went on to attend the University of Maine at Farmington, where she earned a degree in elementary education.

Joanne began her teaching career in 1981 at the Valley View Elementary School in Skowhegan. She taught fourth grade for 30 years, retiring in 2011. Joanne was a dedicated teacher who loved working with her students. She was known for her patience, kindness, and sense of humor.

Joanne was an active member of the Skowhegan community. She was a member of the Skowhegan Historical Society, the Skowhegan Lions Club, and the Skowhegan Congregational Church. She enjoyed volunteering her time to help others, especially children.

Joanne was predeceased by her parents, John and Mary Hewett.

She is survived by her brother, John Hewett Jr. of Skowhegan; her sister, Mary Hewett Smith of Augusta; and several nieces and nephews.

A celebration of Joanne’s life will be held on August 17, 2023, at 11:00 a.m. on the island in Skowhegan at Tewksbury Hall, located behind the Federated Church. A reception will follow the service.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Joanne’s memory to the Skowhegan Public Library, 9 Elm Street, Skowhegan, ME 04976.

Joanne Hewett: A Life Remembered

Joanne Hewett was a beloved teacher, community member, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Joanne’s legacy will live on through the countless students she taught and the many lives she touched. She was a shining example of kindness, compassion, and service.
