India Passport Photo Maker — 2×2 Inch Photo, Free & Online

Indian passport and OCI photos use the square 2×2 inch format — but with a bigger face than the US version: Passport Seva asks for the face to cover roughly 70–80% of the frame, centred, on a plain white background. This maker crops to the exact square, draws the 70–80% face band as guide lines, and downloads 600×600 pixels at 300 DPI plus a printable 4×6 sheet.

One important change to know about: since September 2025, Indian consulates abroad have moved to ICAO-style photos (35×45 mm, digital upload 630×810 pixels, face 80–85%) for passport services. The 2×2 maker here matches the long-standing Passport Seva specification used for applications in India and for OCI cards. If you are applying through a consulate or VFS centre, check which specification your route asks for before you print — and always verify the current rules at passportindia.gov.in. The tool only sizes and crops; it never changes your background.

The full head — top of hair to bottom of chin — must be visible with both edges of the face clearly shown, facing the camera directly. Wear coloured clothing that contrasts with the white background; white clothing that blends into the background is a common rejection.

Pose, background and glasses

Neutral, natural expression with both eyes open and looking straight at the camera. Current consular guidance does not permit glasses, so remove them; in any case there must be no glare or shadow from frames. Head coverings are allowed for religious reasons only, with the full face visible from chin to forehead. No uniforms, no filters, no retouching — the photograph must show your natural skin tone.

How to take the photo at home

  1. Stand in front of a plain white wall in bright, even light — outdoors in open shade works well.
  2. Wear a coloured top so your shoulders stand out from the white background.
  3. Have someone take the photo at eye level from about a metre away, with head and shoulders and space around.
  4. Upload it here and drag so the top of your head touches the red line.
  5. Zoom until your chin is between the green lines — your face should fill most of the frame.
  6. Download the 600×600 photo or the print sheet.

Why Indian photos get rejected

  • Face too small in the frame — the 70–80% coverage is larger than most people expect.
  • Off-white, cream or shadowed background instead of plain white.
  • White clothing blending into the background.
  • Glasses glare, or glasses at all under the newer consular guidance.
  • Head tilted, turned, or an edge of the face cropped out.
  • A retouched, filtered or old photograph.

Printing your photos

The print sheet download places 2 copies on a standard 4×6 inch (10×15 cm) print at exactly 300 DPI. Print it at 100% scale — never “fit to page” — on glossy or matte photo paper, then cut along the light outlines. Measure one photo with a ruler before you submit: it must be exactly 51×51 mm.

Frequently asked questions

Is the Indian passport photo the same size as the US one?

The outer size is the same 2×2 inch square, but India wants a noticeably larger face — about 70–80% of the frame, against 50–69% for the US. The guide lines in this maker are set for India.

What changed in September 2025?

Indian consulates abroad began requiring ICAO-compliant photos — 35×45 mm with a 630×810 px digital upload and the face at 80–85% — for passport services. Domestic Passport Seva applications and OCI cards still use the 2×2 specification this maker follows. Check which route you are applying through.

Can I wear glasses?

Remove them. The newer consular guidance does not permit glasses, and even where clear lenses were once tolerated, glare is a frequent cause of rejection.

Will this photo definitely be accepted?

No tool can promise that. The download matches the Passport Seva size and face band; the Passport Office or consulate makes the final call. Confirm the current specification at passportindia.gov.in before you apply.
