Katy Mills Mall Shooting Suspects Apprehended
Two suspects have been arrested in connection with a shooting at Katy Mills Mall on Monday evening, December 23, 2024. Eighteen-year-old Aaron Noah Chavez has been charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon. A juvenile, whose identity has not been released, has also been charged.
The shooting occurred shortly after 5:15 p.m., causing panic among Christmas shoppers. However, many shoppers interviewed on Tuesday expressed a surprising lack of concern. “We’re from Mexico, so it’s not a big difference for us,” said shopper Jay Montez. “You know, it’s YOLO…when it’s your time to die you die.” Fortunately, no one was injured in the incident, and authorities quickly confirmed there was no active shooter threat. “It broke my heart to know that one of them was 18 years old and the other was a juvenile,” commented shopper Dannicia Grays.
Katy Police Department used surveillance footage to track down the suspects, obtaining a search warrant for a residence where both individuals were apprehended. The suspects confessed to their involvement, and the weapon believed to have been used in the shooting was recovered. Authorities believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing feud between two groups.
Katy City Councilmember Dan Smith first announced the arrests on Facebook. Fort Bend County District Attorney Brian Middleton stated that his office has reviewed the probable cause statements and will request a high bond and significant bond conditions for Chavez due to the severity of the charges. Details regarding the juvenile’s arrest remain confidential, in accordance with state law. Chavez’s bond was set at $500,000 on Wednesday.
