Mary June Spatz passed away peacefully on May 19, 2023, at the age of 85. She was a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, and friend. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary June was born in Spokane, Washington, on June 17, 1937. She was the eldest of four children born to John and Mary Smith. She grew up in a loving home and had a happy childhood. She graduated from Lewis and Clark High School in 1955 and went on to attend the University of Washington, where she earned a degree in education. She later earned a master’s degree in education from Eastern Washington University.

Mary June began her teaching career in the Spokane Public Schools in 1960. She taught for 35 years, during which time she touched the lives of countless students. She was a dedicated and compassionate teacher who loved her students and her work. She was also a gifted musician and sang in several choirs throughout her life. She loved spending time with her family and friends, and she was always the life of the party. She will be remembered for her kind heart, her sense of humor, and her love of life.

In 1962, Mary June married the love of her life, Robert Spatz. They were married for 53 years until Robert’s passing in 2015. Together, they raised two children, Michael and Karen. Mary June was a devoted wife and mother, and she always put her family first. She was a loving and supportive grandmother to her five grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Mary June is survived by her children Michael (Deborah) Spatz of Spokane, Washington, and Karen (Michael) Johnson of Seattle, Washington; her grandchildren Sarah (Andrew) Smith of Spokane, Washington, Rachel (Daniel) Jones of Spokane, Washington, Emily Johnson of Seattle, Washington, Matthew Johnson of Seattle, Washington, and Katie Johnson of Seattle, Washington; her great-grandchildren Henry Smith and Evelyn Smith of Spokane, Washington; and her sisters Patricia Jones of Spokane, Washington, and Barbara Smith of Spokane, Washington. She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert Spatz; her parents, John and Mary Smith; and her brother, John Smith Jr.

A memorial service will be held at St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Spokane, Washington, on June 17, 2023, at 2:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association in Mary June’s name.
