A new documentary about Melania Trump, directed by Brett Ratner and distributed by Amazon Prime Video, is currently in production. The film promises an “unprecedented behind-the-scenes look” at the former and future First Lady, offering viewers a “truly unique story,” according to a statement released by Amazon. The streaming service secured exclusive licensing rights for both a streaming and theatrical release later this year.
This project marks the latest development in the evolving relationship between Amazon founder Jeff Bezos and President Donald Trump. Following a period of public criticism from Trump towards Amazon and Bezos’s Washington Post, a more conciliatory tone has emerged. Amazon’s recent donation of $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund, along with the in-kind donation of streaming the inauguration on Prime Video, further highlights this shift. Bezos’s expressed optimism regarding potential regulatory changes under a second Trump administration underscores this changing dynamic. However, this evolving relationship has not been without internal conflict at the Washington Post, as evidenced by recent staff departures stemming from editorial decisions regarding political endorsements and depictions of the President.
The film also represents a return to directing for Brett Ratner, following allegations of sexual misconduct in 2017. While Ratner’s lawyer denied the allegations, this project marks his first directorial effort since the #MeToo movement gained prominence. Argentine filmmaker Fernando Sulichin is executive producing.
Melania Trump, a relatively private figure throughout her husband’s first term, maintained a low profile even while serving as First Lady, prioritizing her son Barron and her “Be Best” initiative. While she participated in some key events, such as her husband’s 2024 campaign launch and the Republican National Convention, she largely remained off the campaign trail. However, her return to the role of First Lady is likely to necessitate a more public presence. This documentary aims to provide insight into this enigmatic figure, offering a glimpse into her life beyond the public eye.
